Actually people do carry around shopping bags a lot in England even as their school bags. Ones for stores that are not in the UK are more fashionable... like BR, since it's basically saying they had shopped abroad recently.  I guess someone is capitalizing on that!

In Japan it's considered super cool (or at least it was three years ago) to have an American shopping bag. Some girls even use them in lieu of purses.
