I have a beautiful new brown leather jacket but I'm a little stumped about wearing it out. What do I do for a purse? Both of my everyday purses are leather- one black, one dark brown- neither "match". What are the "rules" about wearing leather with leather? Should I look for another kind of fabric?
The only style rules I ever see broken are poor fit, dated-looking choices, and flimsy materials/construction.
I am aware of suggestions to wear smooth leather with suede and vice versa (when it comes to bottoms and footwear), although I have never heard of a rule that states no leather bag with leather coat/skirts/vests/pants. You should choose a bag you like and call it a day - whether it's hide or textile.

I'd do a burgundy, green or blue bag with it--either leather, suede or cloth of some sort. I have a reddish brown leather blazer that I've had for yrs and I don't try to match my brown purses to it (and I don't like black with it). i think it's better just to choose a complimentary color. I'll try to find some options and post them for you.
