My friend is going back to work after being a SAHM for 6 years. She is in desperate need of a work-appropriate wardrobe- she doesn't really have anything at the moment. Her new job is office manager but business casual so she wants to look smart and put togeather.
I would reccommend hitting The Limited for work appropriate attire that isn't too much money. When I needed a work wardrobe I got a ton of stuff from there without blowing too much dough.
She will probably want to get a pant suit and a skirt suit in different colors so she can mix and match. Those pieces alone can make 6 outfits. A few layering pieces like thin cashemer v-necks can work alone or with a suit. I would stick with just a few basics until I got the feel of the office to see whats acceptable and what isn't. Good luck to your friend.
also ann taylor and talbots are great for work basics.
personally i would do a black suit with pants and skirt. (if she finds a good price and fit maybe also a tan or a light gray too).
a couple collared l/s blouses (maybe 3 to start in different colors)
and a bunch of basic light weight sweaters, maybe even some sleeveless in different colors.

I buy a lot of my work stuff from Banana Republic. BR is having a sale right now so she might want to try there. These are the things I wear the most:
Shoes: brown and black heels
Trousers: brown tweed, black and tan/oatmeal
Sweaters: heather gray v-neck, navy cardigan and black cardigan
Tops: white button down
IMPO the key to looking good in a business casual/conservative office is finding pieces that really fit and wearing great shoes. Good luck to your friend!
echo to the other posts.... Check Banana Republic, Gap, Old Navy, Limited, J. Crew, Express and Ann Taylor and Ann Taylor LOFT. Buy 2 best fitting pair of pants she can find first.

I would purcahse washable pants or shirts in black, grey, and tan. You can rotate between just three bottoms in neatural shades without looking like you are wearing the same thing everyday but changing the tops. I would also get a basic pair of black shoes.
pants in khaki, black, gray and brown to start with
sweater sets for the office. it tends to get cold in every office i've worked in
some button up shirts are always good
black and brown shoes. camel too if its in her budget.
Check the sale racks at gap/br/ann taylor loft. I hit gap at the right time last fall and got their modern pants for $20 a piece. Ann Taylor loft has their sweater sets on sale and some early spring and late winter clothes on sale. BR has their sale going on. I love the martin fit pants. They are great for work but are dry clean only. The gap pants are not.
