To be perfectly honest, if he won't answer calls or return messages, I'm not sure there's anything you can do. That sucks, I know, but you can't MAKE him do the right thing. The only thing you can do is to be the bigger people and help him put the pieces back together when things fall apart, as they inevitably will. I'm sorry this is happening to you!

Very wise words blubirde.  I was going to say basically the same thing, that I know it's hard now, expecially since D isn't being a very good friend, but all you can do at this point is be there when he does need you and not be upset then that he's treating you so poorly right now.

I third this notion.  Good friends stay out of couple things.  Just be there for him when he comes to you.

send him a letter.  send it to his work.  focus on how much you and DH both love and appreciate him and let him know that you two will always be there for him.  don't badmouth the GF in the letter.  just send it so he has tangible proof that he has options, you know, something he can read over and over to make himself feel better and help him to gather the courage to do what he has to do.  good luck!

I think everyone else has said everything there is to say - but I just wanted to say good luck! It must be really hard to see him act disrespectfully toward you and your DH after so many years of you being loyal and considerate.
