ebay selling problem
Permalink Closed

I sold something on ebay a few weeks ago and the buyer still hasn't received it.  I shipped via UPS without delivery confirmation/tracking.  The buyer has perfect feedback so I don't think they are lying about not receiving.  What do you do in this situation?  I didn't offer insurance so obviously, I didn't purchase it for this package.  Is it my responsibility once the package leaves my hands?  I also have perfect feedback and would rather not mess it up.

do you mean you shipped via usps? because i think all ups packages are trackable...

if usps, did you ship first class or priority? if it was first class i'd give it another week or even 2. if priority... sounds like you may have to suck it up and reimburse her. i've had this happen to me and it sucks, but i'd ratehr lose the money (as long as it wasn't too $$!) then ruin my feedback. =(

Thanks Mara, I meant USPS...I actually shipped parcel post because it was heavy.

Maybe I'll give it more time.  I just hate to think she received it and it was delivered to her door but maybe she wasn't there so the postman left it there and it was stolen.

ooh, i think parcel post could take a month or more... especially if it was a long distance... i would give it more time and explain to her how it was shipped. i find that the usps usually comes through... i used to sell on ebay like crazy and really only had something lost once in a blue moon.

Did you state in your auction you were shipping parcel? I'm just thinking that maybe when you tell her that if she didn't know it may cause an issue - I know I would be aggrivated if I didn't know because parcel can take a LONG time. If she gripes maybe offer to refund her shipping?

Wow, you guys are nice.  I guess I am an Ebay meanie, because I would rather risk negative feedback than re-imburse $ for something that isn't my fault.

I'm not sure how you list your items, but in my auctions I specifically state that once the package leaves my hands I am no longer responsible and they may choose the optional insurance I have available.  This way there is no grey area about whose fault it is if a package doesn't arrive, but Ebay may have some kind of policy on it.

Do you have a receipt from when you mailed it?  If so, scan it and email it to her so she has proof of shipping.   Plus, you can use that to track a lost package w/USPS.

Sorry 'bout the luck, hope it works out for you.

I guess I looking at it from an ebay buyer standpoint - if a listing says they are sending it first class & they send it parcel because when they got to the post office it weighed more or cost more than they estimated, it's a misrepresentation on your listing. That's what I was getting at. I've also been refunded twice through paypal for not receiving my item, but the seller didn't say after it left them they weren't responsible.

That's a whole 'nother thing!  I didn't realize/notice that part of the equation.  Yeah, any kind of misrepresentation, even something "small" like different shipping method than listed could end up with a full refund to seller, esp. if she/he never gets the item.

Live and learn, right?

Yes, and jettie, I'm not implying that's what you did I was just mentioning it for you to think about if something like that happened. Sometimes I wonder if selling on ebay is more trouble than its worth - good luck!

I didn't state how'd I'd ship in the auction so I don't think shipping parcel post should be a big deal.

I'm definitely going to start adding a blurb about how the package is not my responsibility once I drop off at the post office, like Drew does.  Guess this may just be a lesson learned.

So how long has it been?  After two weeks, I would think it was never going to arrive.  I would never reimburse, If I shipped it, I did my part and it's not my problem it got lost.  I hope it wasn't expensive though.  Anything over $20 I always put delivery confirmation/tracking on.
