What do you do with your extra rooms?
Permalink Closed

OK, so my husband and I have a 4-bedroom house. We have our room (the master), a small bedroom that we use as an office, and a guest room.  Right now, the fourth bedroom is sort of a storeroom for extra stuff  (furniture we will be selling/donating, etc.). But I plan to get rid of all that stuff in the next month or so. It just seems weird to me that we have a room that will just sit empty. It's a beautiful room -- we painted it a dove grey, and it has pretty crown molding. Someday, if we have a child, it will be the kid's room, but that's at least 3-4 years away.

I know there are a lot of young couples on this board...what do you do with extra bedrooms? Any ideas on what I can do with it? It's not big (10'x11'4"). I've thought about a library, but it just isn't big enough for what I was thinking.

Heehee, I have one of those rooms!  We too have the guest room, the office, the MB, and then the OTHER room.  Currently it is my second laundry room; I have an ironing board, clothes drying rack, and movable clothes rack.  I've been using it for my Ebay sales lately.

I've suggested to hubby that we convert it into my closet; can you guess his reply?  A second guest room isn't a bad idea.  We inevitabley end up with someone on our couch when company comes, because it's often more than one person/couple.  If you went with a second guest room you could still use it as a nursery in waiting.  They sell convertable bedroom sets that are so modern and pretty that have beds that go from crib to toddler to full size twin beds and you can't tell they were for babies originally at all; I have seen some beautiful sets.  You could also use it as an "activity" room.  Like, if you do crafts or sewing or any kind of hobby, you could set it up as a chill out room to do your activities in.

I'd probably use it as a sewing room or an extra closet.

We actually have our "own" rooms. My DH has an office /computer room (he has a Mac collection) & I have what I call the reading room because it has book shelves in it but I am using it to store craft stuff, etc. I must admit that right now it is a wreck & holds everything I don't know what to do with, but it's about to be my project. I'm going to put a single bed in there for additional seating for me but then it will be a spot for a guest to sleep.

That's too funny, I made DH promise me that when we have a house he will turn the spare room into a closet.

When we 1st got married we had a spare room in our old apartment and my DH rented out to his friend, since we were poor back then anyway, the extra $ helped.  It didn't work out, but that maybe an option???

ooh, what a nice dilemma to have!

it is seriously my dream to convert an extra bedroom into a giant, custom, jessica-simpson-on-newlyweds-style closet.

or... what about turning it into some kind of relaxation zen den type of space... decadent pillows on the floor, candles, cool curtains... no tv allowed... etc.

what about a fitness room?  you can buy cheaper small flat screen tvs, put a radio in there, a fitness ball, maybe fitness dvds, a mat, bike or treadmill and weights.

or you can make it a multi-purpose room...

i think a really amazing chair, cute rug, cute lamp, TONS of pictures on the wall (kinda like an overall memory room), a long table for ironing, wrapping things, just overall spreading out might be a good addition.  you could add cabinets for storage, or add built-ins.

Fitness room-that is what the single couples I work with have done with their extra room.  I think it is a really good idea.  I plan to do that when I buy a house.

We are the same.  Two people living in a 4 bedroom home.  One bedroom got converted into a 2nd office, another is empty but a gun cabinet, and the third room is absolutely empty.  I want to make one into a guest bedroom since occasionally I have family over.

I definitely don't have that problem-- I feel blessed that for $2200 a month I'm living in a one bedroom instead of a small studio!!!

But if I had that kind of space I would totally turn that space into a closet with lots and lots of space for shoes. Or maybe another cozier TV room.

we have one extra bedroom too. when we get the finances i plan on turning it into a guest room / library or sitting room. i'm thinking of doing a sofa-sleeper with a side table and lamp, my bookcases along one wall with a cozy chair/ottoman and a tall floor lamp beside it. that way we can use it as a library or reading/sitting room when there are no guests. (which is most often the case)

i like the idea of a crafts or project room, but i'm way too messy when it comes to creative stuff and i'd always have to keep the door shut. my messy/creative space is better kept in the basement.

I would love a room just for all my knitting stuff!  My DH honestly needs a room for all his recording equipment.  I'd probably go w/ some sort of hobby room.

you guys are so great! Thank you.

I am definitely not crafty in any way, so unfortunately I can't use it as a hobby room. I am actually turning my living room into a sitting/reading room because I have an amazing chair (it is literally the perfect reading chair), and it is too big to fit through any of the upstairs doorways.

lindsayp - Halley & Sully would loooove their own room. And it would be kind of nice to have all of their toys in one place. Hmmm.....

We have the master bedroom, a guest room, an office, and a spare room. It is a 2nd guest room but right now filled with extra stuff that is going to good will. It will be turned into a nursery when the time comes.

If I had an extra room, I'd put some bookcases in there with a futon (couch by day and guest bed when you need it), a tv, and a treadmill/bike/elliptical machine and an exercize ball.  You could use it to read if your hubby's watching tv in the other room, or work out with the tv on.  That's what I'd do.  That or turn it into some sort of luxurious closet/dressing room.  I'm jealous!
