What can I wear in Mexico?
Permalink Closed

A friend and I are planning to spend Saturday going on a road trip to Mexico. We plan to hang in the border towns like Tijuana and eat some real Mexican.

I've never been. We don't intend to stay during the night or get plastered. How should I dress? Any precautions I need to take in advance?

Hmm...I admit I have never been to TJ during the day. I have been to Ensenada though, which is maybe another hour or so south. It is really beautiful there, as is the coastal drive. I heard TJ can be a bit dirtier, but I am sure it depends on the area. As for clothing, I have no special tips, weather is pretty similar to LA and I am sure your inner stylist will come up with something cute but also comfy.

I have never been to TJ, but I go to Rocky Point a lot. You're probably fine wearing whatever, but I always try to cover up a little more in RP, because both the local AND the tourist guys seem to think they can catcall you whenever they want. Because it's Spring Break time, it's probably worse now.

Also, there is great food in Mexico, but I always prefer taco stands/street vendors, where I can SEE what's being made, to restaurants where I can't.  I've been going for 15 years, and anyone I know who's gotten food poisoning has gotten it from a restaurant. Oh, and don't drink the water . Ice is generally OK, but I try to ask for stuff w/o ice whenever possible. Oh, and if you do swing east to Rocky Point, Chino's Tacos are heaven.on.earth.

In all, Mexico is awesome. I am jealous.

I think TJ is about 3-4 hours from LA. It's only like an hour or two from San Diego, IIRC. The beaches are so beautiful on the Sea of Cortez!

yes, it's about 3-4 hours from LA, depending which way you go and how bad the traffic is (esp. at the border patrol).  i love going to MX!  i'd do what halleybird said--just cover up a bit and be comfy.  nothing flashy (like jewelry you don't want to lose, etc.) if you are going to be hanging out on the streets in tijuana.  i'd just wear jeans or a longer skirt, t-shirt, maybe a hat.  are you guys going over towards the beach, like rosarito? it would be nice to go sit on the sand for a bit.
