Okay, this isn't EXACTLY what the poll was asking, but I think it's funny. For a week when I first went to college there were two Brazillian graduate students living in the place I did (they had spend the summer there and were almost done). They always made a "hot" lunch and dinner: meat, beans, rice, Brazillian veggies, etc. One time they invited me to eat dinner with them, and what we ate was cake and corn on the cob. They didn't feel like cooking so they made a Duncan Hines cake and boiled some corn and that's what I ate with them. I missed out on some great Brazillian food.

Gee, talk about a letdown Zeitgeist!

FWIW, usually in Brazillian culture the biggest meal is eaten midday.  The evening meal is usually a bunch of what we would consider appetizers, and everyone just stands or sits around and picks at this and that.  Hindsight ... ah well .

Shopchicago33- or any one else in Chicago looking for excellent Indian food:

India House on Grand is the best!!! I love Indian food, and all my Indian friends say it is pretty authentic. Go for the lunch buffet- I usually hate buffets, but they have so many good things, and it's a great way to sample a lot of different dishes- and it's like ten dollars!

And just for the record, I haven't had any "digestive issues" from eating Indian food...Ethiopian is another story...

I've had lots of ethnic food: Indian, Mediterranean, Balkan, Vietnamese, East European, you name it. There's a lot of great food in the Bay Area. My options are always limited though because I'm vegetarian I had Ethiopian food once and it was very good... I love Indian food because there are so many good vegetarian options, but Ionly go to two places, where the food doesn't give me strange reactions.

halleybird, I highly recommend you try Vietnamese food. I think it's one of the best "ethnic" foods to try (this may be because I'm part Vietnamese, so I'm probably biased). It's healthy and low-fat because a lot of the dishes incorporate fresh vegetables, but also very flavorful too. I'm sure your area has a couple of Vietnamese restaurants that you can check out.  As for me, I've had Thai and Indian. I thought both were really good. I would love to try Ethiopian if I can find a place near me.

So funny that you wrote this! I just came across a new Vietnamese Deli last night. I had just eaten, so I didn't go in, but it looked good! Do you have any recs? I like most anything except seafood.

If it's a deli, they may have some good sandwiches you can try. I like the ones where they add pate and cured pork (it's sort of like a meatloaf, but is really good).

I also like a noodle soup called pho. It's a beef broth with rice noodles, thin slices of beef, and fresh vegetables.

There are also rice noodle dishes that are usually served with charbroiled pork or eggrolls.

Also, there are hand-rolled wraps. The ones I've had usually have rice noodles, slices of pork, shrimp, and fresh vegetables. When dipped in a peanut sauce, they are soo good.

I can probably go on and on, but these are some of favorite dishes to eat. Let me know if you have more questions.

I've tried all kinds of ethnic food- Ethiopian, Greek, Thai, Vietnamese, Indian, Malaysian, Brazilian, Norwegian, you name it. There are so many ethnic (especially Asian) restaurants around where I live. I'm surprised no one has mentioned Korean food. It is delicious! My bf loves their barbecue stuff, and I'm a big fan of this dish called bi bim bap, which is veggies with egg and bbq beef all mixed together with rice and spicy hot sauce. A lot of the food is spicy, which I love.

halleybird- Since you're interested in trying Vietnamese, you have to try their spring rolls! They are really good. Instead of getting pho, which I find most restaurants put TONS of msg in, I get this dish with vermicelli rice noodles, bbq shrimp and pork. I put only a little of the fish sauce they serve it with since it is sooo strong and put hoisin sauce instead.
