this is sorta a spin off of the chinese food post because it started me thinking about a friend of mine who had never had indian food till she came to school on the east coast after living her whole life in LA.


 


is there a type of ethnic food that you haven't had, but really really want to try and are scared? or have never had the opportunity? or for whatever reason?


 


ive had most types of food, chinese, thai, vietnamese, burmese, ethiopian, mexican, polish, japanese, italian, but ive always wanted to have real french food. and ive always wanted to try spanish food, like paella or to go to a tapas bar.


what about you? curious about any type of food?

I've had a lot, but have never gotten around to ethiopian. I walked past a place once though and it smelled sooooo good!

I've tried a lot, but I've never had Indian.  I'm intrigued because so many people I know love it, but I don't know - it just doesn't seem appetizing to me.

i'm with ILoveChoo...ethiopian food sounds soooo good!  i've always wanted to try it, then someone was telling me about an ethiopian restaurant they went to and everything they had sounded amazing.  i really wanted to try it, but DH said no.   he's usually pretty adventurous, so maybe i'll turn him around...


and yeah, tapas are fantastic, but tapas places have proliferated and the food itself isn't always spanish in origin.  paella's great though!  (and it actually originated in Valencia, Spain, same as valencia oranges...look at me, mixing up threads... )

 i've never had indian because the few that i've passed always look empty and sad inside.  my bf says he has no desire to try it (he doesn't really like spicy foods though).    i seriously want to try it so bad! 


my sister actually took a cuisine class her freshman year of school and they went to all those types of resturants.  i think that's such a great idea for students.  when she's 21 she's taking a wine class (my mom jokes that she's going to fly from home for the semester and take it with her).  based on her tastes, she didn't like the ethiopian food too much.   


relrel- isn't there a great ethiopian place in philly?  i swear my roommates used to go to one all the time.  maybe it was in ardmore?  i can't remember, but i know they loved it.   


i personally love greek and tapas the most.  i love living in chicago where there's sooo many good ethnic places.  there's also this great persian place (Reza's for your chicago girls) that i love too. 


if any chicago girl can find me a great chinese place (take out) i'd be in business!

im super lucky, there are actually THREE really great ethiopian places within ten minutes walking of my house. two of which are within one block. and there is an awesome thai place within one block as well.

I have always wanted to try Indian food. Also I've always wanted to try mediterrean food as well. Couple weeks ago I have Greek food for the first time. Gyros rock!

I want to try indian food too - I have no idea why I haven't. Funny story - my DH works with a lot of indian guys & they had a potluck kind of lunch one day - they all brought authentic indian food & me & my southern pot luck self sent a tator tot casserole - they all thought it was odd & exotic & were scared to try it!

I really love lebanese food - I thought what I liked was greek but it turns out most of what I got at the mediterran restaurants was lebanese. I haven't found any restaurants here that rock my world though. Surprisingly Baton Rouge, LA had great mediterrean food! Who knew?

I also love vietnamese food.

Tell me more about ethiopian food - I've never even heard of an ethiopian restaurant? or maybe I have & didn't know (I did the same with thai - thinking I'd never had it but had indeed).

this tator tot casserole intrigues me. i love tator tots, but it's been so long since ive had them. my mouth is watering right now actually.


ethiopian food is really really super spicy and revolves around what is known is injera. injera is this awesome spongy flat bread that is actually your plate and fork. it's completely hands on. the bread is placed on a big plate and then the food which is generally stewlike is piled on top of the bread. you then scoop up the stew with the injera. ive had goat and beef and veggie type stews with the injera.


 


oh my lord! i just remembered the awesomest place here in philly...it's morrocan food served morrocan style. like twelve courses all sitting on cushions on the floor and you get your hands washed by the servers too. the ethiopian food remidned me of it because it's "finger" food as well, no utensils.


what is lebanese food like?

I would love to try:


-any type of Asian food, except Chinese/Japanese/Thai, which I've had


-South American food


-African food of any type


My city is really not very cosmopolitan, so I haven't had the above. Damn if I haven't had some amaaaaaazing Mexican food in my life, though!

  - I use to go to school in Philly too...I have to say my all time favorite Ethopian resturant in the world is Abysinnia (sp) it beats every Ethopian place I've gone to in DC. I miss Philly sometimes

I do a lot of ethnic foods mainly because I'm African and I love spices, because most of our traditional food is cooked with a lot of it


I'm not sure if I'd ever want to try this..but I was watching a show on traditional Icelandic food and hmm..it looked "interesting" but I'm not totally convinced to try it yet.

halleybird, I highly recommend you try Vietnamese food. I think it's one of the best "ethnic" foods to try (this may be because I'm part Vietnamese, so I'm probably biased). It's healthy and low-fat because a lot of the dishes incorporate fresh vegetables, but also very flavorful too. I'm sure your area has a couple of Vietnamese restaurants that you can check out. 


As for me, I've had Thai and Indian. I thought both were really good. I would love to try Ethiopian if I can find a place near me.

I want to try thai food.  I hear its really good and i have the name of a place here in town but its just getting over there.  I also want to try the brazilian restaurant here in town.  The menu looks soo yummy.  I think tomorrow I might take my bf to the greek/american restaurant down the street that we keep wanting to go to.  I've never had greek so it will be interesting.

I've not tried Indian food.  I'm kind of afraid to, because everytime you see it on TV it's always giving people serious diarhea and I want no part in that!  And I'd prefer to find a place through word of mouth, 'cause sometimes small family joints scare me ......


Thai is one of our personal favorites, and it's very available around here so we eat it alot.  Brazilian food is also very, very good.  I have a friend that just moved from Brazil a year ago and she makes the most amazing stuff!


I'm really interested in trying Ethiopian, but again would prefer a word of mouth rec instead of taking my chances.

i've tried almost every cuisine, but i haven't tried much balkan/eastern european food. seems like very heavy food. (but i love pierogies!) i could eat indian food every single day.

just curious...where did you go to school? what for? ive been wanting to go to absyinnia, but haven't gotten there yet. it's only a couple blocks from my house. dahlak (do you know of it?) is where ive gone for the ethiopian.

nope.  just anything with shrimp and noodles and veggies.  Maybe some pork recipes if you have any.
