Q: Professional hair & makeup
Permalink Closed

So, I decided recently to hire a hair & makeup artist to do me up right for my wedding.  A little bit of a splurge, but everyone on my local board at The Knot looooooooooved her.  When I was home a couple weeks ago, I had my trial and while the hair turned out cute, it was fairly simple for a professional.  And, I really didn't care for the makeup.  I have scarring and breakouts that require concealer - not only did she barely hit me with the concealer, she layered on 4 or 5 layers (seriously) of the bare minerals stuff.  Though it didn't feel heavy, as soon as I smiled it started to crack in my smile lines and around my nose, and shortly thereafter I started to get oily and it looked like my whole face was going to just slide right off.  And she gave me a fakey glow that went from my cheekbones to my temples and up around to the sides of my forehead.  The eyes and lips were near what I used to do for myself when I was performing onstage.

I guess I'm just disappointed.  I scheduled the makeup trial specifically because I was suspicious that anyone else could do my makeup to my satisfaction (not in a snarky way, just because you tend to know what works and doesn't for you), and I would have thought that a professional's standards would have been higher (after all was 'finished' I still had pimples visible as well as scarring).

Thoughts?  Unrealistic expectations or mediocre makeup/hair artist?

I'm sorry elle.  I don't think your expectations are too high at all. I mean this is your wedding day!  Do you have any other options/people to go with? Maybe you could hire someone from a makeup counter at the mall you like?  I know it will be hard with you out of town and all but I wouldn't settle for medicore makeup my any means.

I think I've actually decided just to do my own makeup.  I'm happy with how I do it on a regular basis because I can keeping tweaking until I'm satisfied, so I'll just treat myself to some nice/new makeup and do my 'Special' look myself .

that sounds like a pretty good idea especially if you do a nice look daily.

I did this too, and I am so glad I did. You will look great!

Definitely medidocre job. How many times did you have to wash your face to get all those layers off?

You will do a fantastic job! Let me know if you have any makeup questions. I'd be happy to help.

Aclassicbeauty - I use Cetaphil w/out water to cleanse normally.  Usually the only makeup that is visible on the washcloth after is mascara/eyeliner.  This time, the entire washcloth turned brown front and back !  I do have a couple questions too, if you don't mind?

Recs for an eyeshadow base that is super strong and can hold onto shadow even on my super-oily lids?

Foundation/Concealer?  For the wedding I think I'd like to try doing foundation allover my cheeks for better coverage, but I have no idea what kind of foundation to use.  My skin gets really oily, but it's also super flaky and dry when I try to apply makeup.  Anything with good coverage that will stay put, that won't peel my skin off when I apply it?

I had my makeup done recently for a friend's wedding and it turned out wonderfully. If the person doesn't do a good job (and frankly, I think a lot of people think the Glamour Shot look is a good job), then don't do it. Your expectations aren't too high at all. Even if it weren't your wedding, it still needs to be a decent job and not make you look bad. When I got my hair done, I thought it was a bit simple too, and certainly it wasn't anything I couldn't do myself, but it was really nice to have one less thing to worry about on the big day (I was the MOH). I just know I would have fiddled with my hair for hours if she hadn't taken control.

Eyeshadow base: I once heard a makeup artist recommend those Revlon Age-Defying stay-on-forever cream shadows as excellent bases. I bought one in a skin color shade and she was right - it stays on forever and really makes the shadows pop and do all they're supposed to. I don't use it that often because I hardly go to that much trouble but it's definitely worth a shot at like $7. I've also purchased the Benefit Lemon-Aid and it sucked. A lot. It wasn't creamy, it made my eyelids look yellow and it just plain old didn't work.

Foundation - I don't wear foundation so I'm not much help but have you tried Bare Minerals from anyone else besides the makeup lady? I tried it at Sephora and got one of the girls there to put it on me. She only used one layer and it had a really polished, professional look to it. I didn't end up purchasing because it was too much for what I wanted. (I'm a powder only kinda girl) but if I wore foundation, I'd go that route. It really does well at covering up blemishes and problem areas too. I have a little red spot under my right eye (not a zit or anything, just a weird spot that's been there for years) and usually I can still see a little pink with normal concealer. But with the Bare Minerals, it was completely gone. Disappeared. I was pretty amazed.

Thanks Blubirde!  I will be picking up the Revlon shadow base shortly .

I use the bareminerals powder like a loose powder over my foundation/concealer.  Unfortunately it just doesn't have enough coverage for me (which is why she kept putting on layer after layer trying to build up the coverage beyond limits) - I'm thinking about looking into dermablend.  But other than the scarring on my cheeks, I have nice skin and an even skin tone so I don't like to wear something allover, so I'm hoping a high-coverage foundation will give me the flexibility to build coverage where I need it and then give everything the once over with the bareminerals.

Does anyone know anything about dermablend?

Oh Elle, I am so sorry.  That does not sound like a good experience.  You need to look like you at your best on your wedding day.  It sounds like you are better at doing this than the artist.

If you are really set on having it done professionally, you might want to check at the makeup counters near you and use one of the artists that you like.

But I say get some fun makeup and do it yourself :)

The thing that might work for you is giorgio armani's luminous silk foundation. It's $50 a bottle but it may be worth it for your wedding day. I've tried high and low and GA is probably the best foundation out there. I use the matte silk one becuase I'm a walking oil slick, though. I think some of the girls here use the LSF for special occasions.

The other foundation I've used with a lot of success is a Valerie Beverly Hills liquid foundation that's got a similar texture and slip to the GA ones. Believe it or not, I've been using this with Jane oil-free powder lately and my skin is totally flawless in the mirror.

I have lots of scarring but an otherwise nice skin tone and mostly smooth skin as well.

Ah! I love Jane's powder! I used to wear it all the time. I could hardly ever find it, so I'd stock up when I did. Now I can't find it anywhere. Where do you get yours? I just assumed they stopped making it. I haven't seen Jane cosmetics around in ages... maybe I should start looking again?

No, your expectations aren't too high. Besides, even if they were, it's your wedding day, you're allowed to have high expectations. I did my own makeup for my wedding, and I picked up a few pointers along the way, and I have a foundation rec. for you.

First, while I am usually an advocate for SPF under/with make-up, I have heard and read on many occassions that they can interfer with makeup and photography. So, this is one time where I would skip the SPF. It won't hurt for one day! Also, I would experiment with different looks and have someone take a few snap-shots of you in whatever light you'll be in the most (ie outdoors, incandesent, flourescent, etc.) That way you'll know how what you see in the mirror translates to film. Also, once you have figured out what your wedding "look" will be, I'd start wearing it on days when you know that you'll be running around like crazy to see how it wears and how long you can go between touch-ups.

Lastly, you may want to try Lancome's 'Photogenic' foundation. They have 2 versions, and one is for dry skin. I used this for awhile and really liked it. Also, MAC makes an oil absorbing powder, but a blot paper may be better to have on hand to blot any oil instead of masking with powder. I don't know how the MAC powder photographs, but it seems like it may be too heavy, but it's a product worth checking out.

GD - is the Lancome foundation oil free?  I haven't used their products for a long time because I found them too heavy/oily in the past, but like I said it's been a long time!

Hmm, doesn't prescriptives do the color match thing?  Anyone have good/bad to say about prescritives?

Elle, I have an opinion about Prescriptives. I was at their makeup counter about 3 months ago. They did the whole color match thing, and the woman chose a foundation for me. It looked good in the store, and even outside when I went out there with a mirror, so I bought it. But then on the way home in the car (about 40 mins later) I looked in the mirror and noticed that the foundation had started to darken on my skin, leaving a gorgeous telltale line between my face and neck. So maybe it was reacting with my face's natural oils, but I was not pleased, and had to return it. Also, I don't feel like they have enough skin shade colors to begin with.

The one I bought was oil free. Then, I went back to buy a replacement bottle and accidently bought the one for dryish skin, which felt oily, but don't know if it had oil in it.

A lot of people swear by Armani's Luminous Silk foundation. I bought it and like it, but I didn't feel that it lived up to the hype. I have had good luck with Chanel's double perfection foundation.

It may be a good idea to go to a different make-up counter every weekend and have them match you with the foundation for your skin type, apply it, and ask for a sample too. I have found that if I explain that I want to wear it for a week before buying it, and take their business card or name that they are pretty helpful. Some will insist that you can buy it and return it if you don't like it, but I tell them that I am weighing several brands and will make my final decision by the weight, feel and performance between the several samples I already have. That shuts up the pushy new sales ladies and gets me some to take home to try for awhile.

Hey Elle, do you have a foundation brush? Have you used one before? My BFF bought one awhile back to use with her Chanel foundation and swears by it for special occasions (pricey so she doesn't want to use it all up). Our makeup artist for her wedding used one also, although I forget what foundation she used. I think the one my BFF bought was Chanel also. She got it at Sephora so maybe you could go check it out if you don't already have one.
