I have a tailore, but her prices seem to continually creep upward (we have been using her for nearly four years). Today I took two pairs of pants to be lengthened and she said $15 per. Also I want the back pockets removed / sewn shut and she said $7 per pair, but that's a "discounted" rate, because I was bringing some other stuff to be altered as well.
Am I just being overly frugal to question the prices? I don't mind spending so my clothes will fit, but sometimes it seems like *everything* has to be altered, and I just get tired of buying stuff and then having to pay extra to make it fit the way I want.
What prices are y'all paying for this kind of stuff?

$7 to sew up pockets seems a bit much - as inept as I am with a sewing machine, that's one thing I feel confident doing myself and it takes all of 60 seconds a pair.
I usually pay $10 to have a hem done, so I guess $15 a pair doesn't sound outrageous.

it seems a bit high, but it really depends on what type of pants you are talking about. if they are a very nice dress pant that is lined, that's probably fair. for a pair of khakis, i don't think it should cost more than $8-10. i've never had pockets removed, so i can't help on that one.
i agree that sewing pockets shut is *very* easy so $7 seems excessive there--esp. if that's allegedly a "discount." tbh, it sounds like she may be trying to hustle you a bit. my tailor (may he rest in peace ) used to charge me $10 for hemming jeans and he always did an excellent job. in fact every piece he ever altered was done with such care and attention to detail. and he was the nicest man too...i miss him.
anyway, sorry for the tangent but i think you may be getting overcharged and she may think she can because you've been going to her for so long that you have no other options. you should just tell her the prices are creeping up and if it doesn't stop, you'll have to take your business elsewhere. maybe try to sugarcoat a bit but still make her realize that she has to keep your business and shouldn't just take it for granted. good luck!
