NY girls help (or anyone else familiar with NY)
Permalink Closed

My in-laws asked us to go to New York for Thanksgiving so we are trying to get our flights in line early. I have never been (am so excited!) so I have no clue as to which airport to fly into. Help. We are staying at The Kimberly which is at 145 East 50th Street. They are paying for the hotel so that is the decision, but knowing them I imagine it's pretty cool.
Kimberly Hotel

Please advise on the best airport to get there in the cheapest cab. I think it's cheaper to fly into LaGuardia but it's not much to go into JFK & if the cab isn't that different, it doesn't matter. But I really am clueless. Help!

TIA

I assure you, your hotel location is great. You'e within ten blocks of H&M.

LaGuardia is closer to Manhattan than JFK. I HATE LaGuardia with a passion though...methinks it's a horrid airport.

How about flying into Newark? I don't know how much the cab fare is into Manhattan but I'd think flights are cheaper there.

What airport would you be flying from?

YAY!!! H&M!!!

We will be flying from Dallas - DFW. I can hardly stand it!!!!!! I can't wait.

I checked DFW to JFK yesterday & flights were only about $250, which i couldn't believe. I haven't checked any other airports because a list of 20 or so came up & I got overwhelmed...

I would prefer to fly into JFK. You can take a taxi from there to Manhattan for a flat fee of $45.

Congrats on your visit! Having your hotel paid for is sweeeet!

I strongly recommend taking American Airlines since Dallas is a hub, as is LaGuardia and JFK. I'd go for JFK if you could because LaGuardia is an evil evil airport/place/pit of universe. Plus American is the only decent major carrier left IMO.

I just signed up for American Advantage yesterday before I booked my flight home in a few weeks - I can't believe i didn't do this when I moved 2 years ago & started flying pretty regular! DOH. Why do you think LaGuardia is evil? Just curious, I trust you!

Thanks starstuff for the info on the cab - that's cheaper than I would have thought for sure. Good to know.

LaGuardia is the less organized airport of the two...I feel like all the terminals are cobbled together in a sort of confused way. When there are delays, they're usually worst at LaGuardia. JFK is the larger and newer airport of the two.

i would say don't do newark, unless it's significantly cheaper like $75 or more. otherwise you'll end up paying it back in cab fare.

If you want to be budget-conscious, you could take the subway from JFK or the train from Newark to Penn Station. There are also private shuttle busses from Newark (and maybe from the others too)-- I think they're called the SuperShuttle? I think they're rather reasonable.

The subway from JFK isn't bad, but I wouldn't recommend it if you have more than 1 suitcase per person...it does get tough trying to carry really heavy bags on the subway. The cool thing about that is that you get to take the (relatively) new SkyTrain, and because I'm a dork, I think it's really cool to see NYC from it.

I used to live in NYC and now that I don't I travel back there about every 2 months.  I've used all the airports (JFK, LaGuardia, Newark) several times including travel to and from the airport into the city.  By far, my favorite is Newark.  For starters I like the airport the best.  I also like that it has access to the train which is the cheapest and fastest way to get into the city w/o using a cab.  You can take the airtrain from Newark Airport to the Newark Airport train station and from there pick up NJ Transit into Penn Station.  I know it sounds like a lot but it's really easy and much faster than taking the subway from JFK (and more pleasant IMPO).  One tip, if you decide to do the Newark route, make sure you print out the NJ Transit train schedules for the days you're traveling so you have some idea the times the trains come.  HTH!
