Shopping in Beijing?
Permalink Closed

My husband has to travel to Beijing for work (yes, poor him) and he's really disappointed that I can't travel with him...he might like to bring back some nice "souvenirs" for me though. *s*

However, I have no idea about Beijing shopping, so can't give him any suggestions. Has anyone been, or does anyone know what sorts of lovely things he might look for?

ooh... go to the pearl mart! I got a nice 16" 14mm freshwater pearl necklace for approx $80, huge coral branch necklace for $15, pearl and jade tasseled pearl rope (for tying in a variety of ways for $30), coral bead tasseled rope (this one's nice to use as a belt too) - and there was a Sunday market with TONS of beads... I'll have to ask my husband where it's at...  I also have a contact for the pearl mart where I bought most of my jewelry at.  I'll post more later.

My sister went last year and got some amazing stuff! The coolest thing was that she got an adorable skirt made for $10! But that would be a little hard with your husband shopping for you, although he could take your measurements? I will ask my sister and get back to you.

I hope he's a good negotiator, because you have to rediculously low ball - and they laugh and roll their eyes then eventually come way down.

it's called the Pearl Market (not Mart) Hong Qiao Market - I am going to have to find the card for the shop on the top floor of the market and PM the info to you (the bottom floor is super nasty knock off stuff and god forbid you look at anything - they physically latch onto you and won't let go until you buy something - so tell him to get to the top 2 floors as fast as he can!)  anyway - the floors progress in quality of merchandise offered - 1st floor crappy knock-off Tommy Hilfiger and Rolex watches, top floor black pearls and diamonds.

this picture is from the 2nd to the top floor. I also got a HUGE green boulder turquoise necklace for $15. the necklaces seen here probably range in price from $7 - $15 depending on the stone (I think I see my coral beaded rope necklace on the far left bottom).

here's a link for reviews for the Peal Market (where I got the pictures)

Panjiayuan is the Sunday flea market - where you can get anything Chinese - kites, jewelry, Mao memorabilia, ceramics, cloth, rugs, bags, junk, antiques, fake antiques, etc. it's HUGE. it's a really cool experience - it's all set in these super old Chinese pavillions. here's a good link http://www.gluckman.com/BeijingMarket.html

oh lord...it's been a while.

from what i remember....

Wangfujing- this is right near Tiananmen Square and features a little bit more upscale shops

The Silk Alley- I actually forget where this is at, but it was pretty great. lots of little stalls and such full of goodies.

The Friendship Store- very touristy, but worth a spin through once.

i actually didn't buy that many things while i was there...silk robes for everybody of course, lovely teapots, little statue men, a great bracelet made from little blue and white beads, and a great denim purse.

the teapots are actually my favorite item that i have from that time. they are tiny, one cup (little teacupts, not american mug size) pots carved directly from stone in really cool shapes, animals and other things.

just tell him to take lots of pictures of everything he possibly can, the photos are the coolest part of the trip, imo. and make sure you post them when gets back!

how long is he going to be there for?

Thank you, ladies! I *knew* someone (or several someones) would have the answer.

detroit, you are making me drool just with that pic! Now I really wish I could go, because while DH sort of knows his jewelry (he says he's gotten a crash course from being with me), he doesn't know it as well as I do. I'd really go to town...hm. so maybe it's best that I'm not able to go.

Unfortunately, he's not much of a negotiator...he tends to just pay for stuff. So maybe he shouldn't tell me what he pays, and we'll both be happy, eh? But I'll pass along your info, so he knows it's expected.

I'll add this info to the info I've already given him and see what happens. He's there for work - for five days - and I'm not sure how much time he'll actually have to shop and sightsee. But I know he'll want to bring back something...

chic, i think he will probably pass on buying clothes for me, for the most part. He has good taste but I don't know detailed he wants to get as far as measurements and such. But jewelry or beads or something like a fun bag - well, that always works for me.

relrel, I will definitely send the digicam along with him. He tends to forget to snap pics, but this is the first time he's traveled overseas, so I'm hoping he gets snap-happy and takes lots of lovely pics for me to see when he comes home!

Thanks to all of you for the helpful information. I promise he'll be suitably prepped. *s*
