question about pictures taken with digital camera
Permalink Closed

OK this is a bit embarrassing to admit but I will anyway--I have *hundreds* of pictures of Lucy on my camera and no idea how to put them into my computer so that they can be printed out or emailed to people (or even posted here).  As a result, nobody ever sees any pictures of her! My husband has to do it for me, and he's sick of me always asking him about it.  I really need to learn how to do this myself (obviously).

My question is--how difficult is it to do?  Can someone just tell me how to do it?  This is sad--I know there is a part of the camera that you put in the computer but that's about the extent of my "camera knowledge".  Is there a website that explains it or something?  I feel really silly that I can't do this on my own and want to learn ASAP (also I want to enter one of the pictures into my mom's group photo contest).  Thanks!

Since everyone's computers and cameras are different it would be kinda hard to tell you exactly what to do.

Can you just ask your husband to show you, and tell him that you will take notes or something, so that you will be able to do it on your own in the future?

what kind of camera do you have?  I think they all come with software that automatically uploads with the click of the button.  Maybe someone can help once we know what camera you have?

Yeah, but I'm getting impatient and was looking for a shortcut.  We can't agree on a time--he never really wants to do it.  Uggh.  (in his defense things have been super hectic lately).

Hey aurora--I don't know what it is.  I'll check tonight and post again.

Ok.  I have a canon and its really simple.  I just plug it in to the computer and the program pops up and I just click a button and it transfers all my pictures for me.

Mine is the same way.  The computer came with it's own cable that we just keep attached to the computer.  Whenever I want to move pics from camera to computer, I plug the cable into my camera, turn the camera on, and up pops the program and all the pics currently on my camera.  My program has an automatic save button (which sounds like what Aurora is talking about), but usually I save individual pics by clicking on them and clicking save which takes you into My Pictures.

If you want to post pics here, you have to sign up for an online picture host.  I use Shutterfly here and it's always worked great.  You go to the webisite and set up your account, and then you click the 'get pictures' icon and it takes you right to your own My Pictures folder, where you select the pics you want and download them.  Once they're in your Shutterfly folder, all you have to do is right-click and copy the pic and come over here and paste it in.

HTH!

my older camera (3 years) is the same thing as Elle's.  the camera comes with a (usb) cord.  you plug one end into the computer (usually in the back of the computer), plug the other end into the camera, and turn on the camera.

then, my computer automatically opens the program and asks me if i want to load the pictures.  it shows all the pictures on my camera and i just check the boxes of the ones that i want to load.  it then goes to My Pictures on my desktop (you can categorize by folders, etc...)

i use photobucket.com to put pictures on here.  you sign up (like shutterfly), and then you browse your computer, go to my pictures, and then hit the upload button on photobucket.com.

you can do it alb!  don't be intimidated!

ETA:  i want to see pictures of Lucy.  i love baby pics!

Does your camera have a memory card?  Mine does, and my computer has different memory card slots.  It's way better than using a usb cord (you aren't leaving your camera on to put them on your computer).   Then I go into a picture program (I use Microsoft Picture It) edit the pics if they need anything and save.  For posting pics on the web I size the pictures down so they files aren't so big, and upload to to my hosting website.  I will keep the file sizes large if these are pics I send to Shutterflly to get printed.

read your camera's manual, if you can't find it, you can usually print one off at the manufacturer's website (usually in pdf format I think).  Usually the software that comes with your camera has a nice enough program to help store and edit your photos.  It's really easy, just take the time to mess around with it one day and you'll see it's a piece of cake.  I still like professional lab prints better, so I don't print at home.  I either use online photo sites, like yorkphotos.com or snapfish.com, or I just go up to my local CVS photo lab and get prints there.

And like Cortney1982 said, if you have memory card slots in your computer, even better.  I don't, but it truly isn't difficult to use the USB cord!  It's probably most difficult to find the darn thing in my messy desk drawer.

Thanks, girls, that was very helpful.  I might have more qs after I read this again in more detail.  I brought my camera to work today and it is a canon.  I'll post more about the details when I get a chance--our office is being audited today so I can't really be on the internet as much as usual.  I really appreciate your responses though.  Oh and I think I have a memory card but will check with hubby and report back.  Thanks again--you girls are awesome!

Okay this was very helpful.  I'm almost there.

I took the memory card out of the camera and put it in the "sandisk" holder thing.  I then plugged it into my laptop and clicked on our "Dell Picture Studio" icon, and now I'm stuck.  What do I do next?  It just has ads like "dell exclusive offer", click here, learn more, etc. then icons for paint shop and photo album--this isn't what I need, is it?

shopgirl82--I'm excited that you want to see pics of Lucy.  I'll post some as soon as I can!

ETA--Okay I did it (but my husband had to help me and it took him a while to find the file to put them in).  Anyway, I'm going through them now--yay!  Going to photobucket or something similar in a minute!

alb, can you click on the photo album part? It may be trying to get you to create an album. I wish I had a dell so I could help more....

I've been following this post too because I am so excited about seeing pictures of Lucy too - when I get to see pixs of talia & gigi it just makes my day! Of course STers seem to have the most adorable babies. And I don't even think I'm biased!

Laken or anyone--I'm on shutterfly, clicked "install now" and the little design is moving around like something is happening but it's taking awhile.  Is it downloading (or uploading) the pics now?  I have a lot so maybe that's why it's taking awhile??

If you have a bunch it will probably take a while. I've never upload or downloaded (not sure which it is either!) more than 10 or so at a time so I'm not sure how long more would take....

If it seems like it's taking too long I'd stop it & start over using fewer pictures, but that's just me.

yeah, that seems long. Can you stop it? I don't mean to talk down to you but I seriously just learned this after how many years on the internet.....if you hit that stop button on your toolbar it should quit what you are doing. I don't know how fast your internet connection is but 15 minutes seems long for any connection.

Thanks, laken.  I finally just cancelled the installation and went to bed.  I think I might try to contact them today to find out what the problem was.  Would love any suggestions anyone might have too!
