i just wanted to run this by you guys to get some feedback. sometimes i think i've been living by myself too long and getting totally neurotic.
anyway n/s if this has made national news yet, but 2 weeks ago a young woman was killed in nyc. it's a really sad story and the crime was particularly heinous. from my understanding the police think she was followed out of a bar and grabbed, but they're not 100% sure.
so now i'm supposed to go to this happy hour thing, and of course, it's at the bar where this all happened. which i confirmed this morning. um, i don't really want to go. the logical part of me realizes that this is just a random (though horrific) crime, and that there's probably no connection b/t the bar and what happened. but it bothers me. am i crazy?
I'm the same way. A Steak and Shake by my house was held up and a lot of the people were kept as hostages in the freezer (horrible!). I haven't been able to go back. Irrational, yes, but I'm crazy like that.

I'd probably be really nervous too. Did they catch the person who did it? I don't think it's being paranoid. Sometimes your instincts are your best weapon. Just don't let being scared run your life, but it doesn't sound like you do that anyway. . .
At any rate, no, I think it's only natural to feel the way you are.

I don't think you're being paranoid at all. I've been following the news on the murder, too, and I think anyone would feel a bit apprehensive after hearing about it - I certainly do.
Actually, a bouncer from that bar is currently being questioned by the police, although he has not been charged with anything yet. He does have a criminal background, though.
omg, i'm in nyc too- i'd be totally paranoid! If it makes you feel better though- I bet that bar is the safest one in the city now- i'm sure people are being really careful around it now. I'd be REALLY scared if this starts happening at random bars in the city. Just stay with at least two friends if you can, and be around people when you leave- maybe some guys you trust can escort you to a cab.

yeah, I've been following this and I read about the bouncer's involvement this morning. I read and watch a lot of true crime stories (probably smut I know) and I think it makes me extra cautious about things like this. I seriously would not go unless I had people with me at all times, especially when walking from the bar to my car. Chances are high that it wouldn't happen again in the same area, but you never know.
honey, just be safe and stay with your friends, don't get too drunk, and practice good sense and you will be ok.
By the way, the news this morning said that the owners of the bar changed their original story that she left the bar on her own to this: now one owner said he asked the bouncer to remove her as she was highly intoxicated, and the bouncer took her out a side door; they heard a muffled scream. So, that's the latest... makes my skin crawl.

Idiots should have checked the guy's criminal record before hiring him.

OMG thats so sick. This bar is not going to be around much longer. I hope they are not lying about the new story- maybe they thought they heard this because the guy is now being questioned. I just really hope they get the story straight and catch the right guy- not pick the most convenient or likely suspect.
things like that freak me out.. but some great advice from the board. ps where is this bar?! i gotta know!

I read that same article in the New York Post, but I am very sceptical about the "facts" that are included. Everything of consequence is from a "source." tell me who?
There is no way that I can take seriously a news article that is only based on anonymous sources. Especially when it comes from the Post. It isn't that hard to be a responsible newspaper.
shopgirl, that story isn't just in the post, but The NY Times as well, and in papers across the country. Do a google news search w/her name for more info. It's true.
honey - i'm sure you'll be safe, but yuck! of course you don't want to hang out there! just tell your friends and get them to switch to another bar, i think that would be completely reasonable!
thanks for the advice. it's reassuring to know i'm not totally off my rocker. it's just really sad b/c i forget that i live in a huge city and end up with this false sense of security. then something really random and tragic happens.
i got an email this morning saying that the happy hour has been moved to another bar *yay*
My best friend lives in Queens, and she is paranoid too.
She went out w/ a friend on friday and the N wasn't running to Queens. She was freaking out. She couldn't get a cab and didn't want to be alone at midnight in the city.
