I'm going on vacation to Hawaii in April. I have no idea what to bring. Could you gals help me out here?
I'm a mom with a 7-month-old baby and we're going with some of my husbands friends and their families. They've been vacationing in Hawaii for so long but I hardly know any of them to ask but I don't want to feel embarrassed by being over or underdressed.
I need help with picking out a swimsuit (no bikinis, please) and some cool street clothes.
bathing suits: do you have a jcrew nearby? get your fanny over there and just start trying stuff on. i think pretty much everyone on here will tell you jcrew is a great place to start for bathing suits.
other street clothes: this is what i would pack if i was going to hawaii...but take it with a grain of salt because i don't know your style.
a couple pairs of bottoms...
a couple tops that would go with any of the bottoms that i packed...
and then a whole ton of tanktops and camis in whatever color i deemed most fun and bright. old navy and delias are pretty good places for tanktops. a couple pairs of flip flops, a nice pair of sneakers for walking, and perhaps a pair of heels and a dress for going out at night.
i hope that helps some. what is your style normally like? just hop onto a bunch of different websites and see what catches your eye. i like to browse through urbanoutfitters, anthropologie, delias, forever 21 and jcrew just to see what's out there.

All of the above are great ideas. I would suggest you also take a cute sundress or other summery dress for going out to dinner.
We were in Hawaii a couple of years ago in mid-March and we had two or three cool overcast days, so some kind of a casual jacket or hoodie is a good idea. Last year we were there in February and it was somewhat warmer, but again, there were a couple of cool days, so check the weather just before you go.
Thank you, relrel and Maven! I love all of your ideas.
My style is pretty err, boring. Very basic. I was looking into updating my look and it was kinda harsh on my brain to start with a bathing suit but I'll definitely check out JCrew!
I especially like the cropped khaki pants, I'm so going to get a pair of those. Now I feel a bit more prepared going to the shopping mall for Hawaii outfits.
Seems like we'll be in Canada in July so hopefully, my new outfits will carry me through.
I'm about 5'6'' tall and about 140 lbs. Wear a size between 6 and 8. Would never say I'm fat but I'm traveling with a bunch of folks who are shorter than 5 feet and wears size 0, so I was getting a bit nervous. But I don't think I can go wrong with your recommendations.
One more question though, I've recently got a gorgeous white leather Gucci hobo shoulder bag. Would it be too much if I take that with me on my trip?
Also, would a silk, dark-red with pattern summery dress be considered over-dressed?
Hawaii is fairly casual - even at night. I went for 2 weeks and brought mostly capri pants and tank tops/tees for during the day - and sundresses for night. We did a lot of hiking, and activities during the day - so capri pants and sneakers were a must - but if you are not going to be as active, skirts and sundresses work during the day too.
Don't be afraid to wear some hawaiian print clothing - it's not cheesy there - it's totally acceptable! I would also wear my hair up and throw a flower in it often, another really nice hawaiian look.
Like JMR said, one of the best things about Hawaii is the casual atmosphere. I've been at this time of year and I took quite a few casual and resort-y sundresses for day and night. I think the dress you described would be lovely. And of course you should bring your new bag!
I was in Hawaii for a week two years ago when my brother got married. Such a gorgeous, romantic place, and also casual in the clothing department. Those looks above will be perfect. And definitely bring your new bag! There is some serious shopping in parts of Hawaii, so it won't be out of place.
