My eyes are stinging!
Permalink Closed

For the past 2 weeks, around 3-4pm each day, my eyes begin to sting (it kinda feels like when you get shampoo in your eyes) and it doesn't stop until I go to bed. It's sooo annoying and painful. I've been getting the same amount of sleep as I always do (granted, it's only like 6 hours a night) and I haven't started using any new makeup. Has this ever happened to anyone else? Does anyone have any guesses as to what my problem might be, or what might help me?

(Oh, and I do have glasses, but I only need to wear them when I'm driving at night, or trying to read things that are far away, etc. My eyesight overall isn't bad.)

You could have dry eyes, or maybe it's allergy related. Try some eye drops for dry eyes.

Christine, I am so in your boat! Mine's been happening for a little over 2 weeks. Plus, it's even worse because I wear contacts so I had to wear my glasses for about a week and a half.

The doctor said I had dry eyes and gave me extra lubricating eye drops. They seem a little better now, but what sucks is that a number of things can lead to having dry eyes so it's hard to pinpoint a cause.

Thanks girls.....but I tried eye drops last night, and WOW -- they intensified the stinging feeling x100 for like 15 minutes.....then it went back to the normal stinging. yay. I've used those same eye drops in the past and haven't had any problems, so it's just weird. The weirdest thing is that it starts around the same time each day.

Liz, have your eyes been stinging nonstop, or just at certain times of the day like mine? I keep thinking it might somehow be related to tiredness, or maybe the dry, cold New England air...I don't know.

Don't use those RedEye drops or whatever they're called.  Get some that are JUST lubricant...they basically emulate tears.

Hmmm...I wouldn't mess around when it's something involving your eyes.  I'd get to an eye doctor ASAP and see what's up.  Chances are it's probably nothing, but in the case that something weird is going on, you should have a doctor check.

Exactly. I had dry eye last semester, and it ended up being fairly serious. They had to give me steroid eye drops to clear it up, and I still have to be careful...

Def. go see a doctor.

When my allergies act up, I get really bad stinging eyes that def. do not go away with drops or benedryl.  It hurt so bad over last summer that I ended up rubbing them so much that I scratched my cornea.  Quite possibly the most annoying pain ever.  Not to mention, eyes tend to get infected easily when there is a mucous break down.

For me, it was after 4-5 hours after putting my contacts in. I was getting dry eyes and then my contacts were sticking to my eye. The cause of the dry eyes was what was concerning me and my doctor though because it came on kinda suddenly. I switched my brand of contacts and that seems to have helped a lot.

Dry eyes can be caused by tiredness, too much time on the computer (you don't blink as much as you ought to), enviromental factors, or even an allergic reaction to something.

I hope you find out what's triggering your eye pain. I know it sucks!

BTW, I agree with not using Visine/Red Eyes. Your doctor will give you lubricating eye drops that are much better for your eyes and way more moisturizing.

Thanks for the suggestions, girls. I'm going to make an eye appt and explain what's been going on.

Liz, you're right, I think it might have to do with the computer -- good point. I stare at my laptop for like 11 hours a day. I don't blame my eyes for being fine with it for the first few hours, but then getting really irritated after a while!
