Yes, I believe it is illegal...

I had that happen and I couldn't get it fixed until a week afterward. I personally just drove anyway. I figured if I got pulled over, I would just tell them I was getting it fixed the next week and they would just let it go. I guess it just depends on how much you need to drive your car.  If you can use another car or go without driving until it's fixed, that is the best option, of course. However, if you are going to miss work or school because of it, I would take the risk and drive it.

I just had to take a defensive driving course and they actually covered this! It is illegal if it is taken off the driver's side door. However, you can legally drive without a mirror on the passenger side door. That's how it is In NJ anyway, but with something like this I would imagine it's the same almost everywhere.

same in NY -- have to have driver's side, but not necessarily passenger-side (unless you're deaf, then apparently you have to have both. Or so my dad says.

thanks! i'm in ohio, and actually called our campus police to check, i'm such a dork. He said he didn't think it was illegal (great, i'm glad you know the laws) but that its so common on campus that if I were to get pulled over to just have proof that I'm getting it fixed as soon as the part comes in. I really will only be driving to the gym and back till it gets fixed anyways.

thanks for the help though!
