Any thoughts on how to get one for $50-100 a month? I'm thinking about going the Best Buy route and waiting until they have 18 months interest free on their computers. I just want to see if there are any other sites/stores/suggestions out there.
I don't need anything crazy but I want it to last about 5 years and not cause me much stress (so Dell's out). Here are my specifics:
laptop
lots of hard drive space (for my ipod and such)
dvd & cd r/w
at least 512 ddr (I prefer 1G)
and that's about it. should i add anything else to my requirements?

I honestly think it's extremely unrealistic to expect ANY desktop computer to last 5 years, unless you're willing to live with a dud for the last year or two.
I know for a fact that Apple/Mac is not perfect, and the prices are WAY much higher than anything pc.
Dell is a good bang for the buck machine. Honestly, if you want the best value and for it to last as long as possible, get the cheapest dell you can find that fits your requirements and get their service contract.
Just curious, exactly what is it about your Dell that you hate? keep in mind that whether it's a laptop or a desktop makes *all* the difference....
Agreed. Bleh. I hate computer shopping. And I hate shelling out the dough for it, although I do love my computer. It's like a pet to me.
My current comp has lasted 6 years but it was top of the line when I purchased it and it's on it's very, very last legs currently. I've been getting the blue screen of death way more than I care to.
I have an eMac and I can easily see it lasting me through the end of college (another 2 years) and possibly longer even though I'd really like to trade if for a PowerBook.

That's not necessarily true- I've had my ibook for almost three years now and when I researched everything and compared prices on similar amounts of memory and RAM, etc., the Apple was actually, far and away, the cheapest bet. Two friends of mine- PC users- recently had their computers crap out on them and when they went to research prices, etc., overall, Apple was again the cheapest for the ram, memory, etc. Also, in the next couple of months, apple will be using a new chip, which will drive the price down further. I've owned a number of computers- both mac and pc, and my ibook kicks all their butts for staying power. I have a friend who has an apple computer that he's had for 6 years- and it's still working. Apple's cs is excellent as well. I don't know how much it comes out to, but Apple does offer a monthly payment plan. Also, if you're a student or work in education, you can get a 10 percent discount. HTH!
I love my Mac too. I bought it on Amazon and signed up for the credit card and got a period of time where it was 0% APR. I'm not sure how long it was though.
Nope. I didn't get the raise I was hoping for (stupid work politics) so while I need a new computer, I'm not sure now is the best, best time to buy one. I'm still looking though...
