i haven't read the article laken posted yet, because i'm at work and afraid of the tears that others have mentioned, so i'm saving it for later.

i'm 100% pro-choice.  and, like blubirde, i take issue with the term partial-birth abortion.  i also take issue with the term pro-life.  i mean, we're all pro-life, aren't we?  i prefer the term anti-choice, but i digress...

i definitely think it's interesting that the court is taking this up so soon after roberts and alito joined up...i'm very interested in seeing how this goes.  i just can't imagine how anyone feels they have the right to tell others what they can or cannot do with/to their own body.  and while i'd love it if no one had abortions, that just isn't going to happen, even if the law is changed.  we'll just be back in the good ol' days of back-room, illegal and unsafe procedures, and i don't see how that's good for anyone.

IMHO, abortion should always be the mother's choice. We must trust women to make ethical decisions based on their judgements and unique circumstances. To deny a woman the right to her body is very, very wrong IMHO.

this is my thought on abortion. it's a personal choice that can not and should not be forced upon anyone by a government. to put it quite bluntly, i don't give a shit if you are pro-life or pro-choice, or if you have an abortion or have the baby, it's your choice. but ill be damned if i let somebody else decide for me what i can do with my body. as all those lovely protesters say, "keep your laws off my body".

This got me thinking... exactly how many female representatives and senators do we have at the federal and state level?  Not a lot.  So basically, the laws are being written by men, who really don't have much to do with the whole pregnancy and childbirth thing.  This really bothers me.

First of all, I agree with Blubirde.  The term "partial birth abortion" is extremely manipulative, and I prefer the term late term abortion.

Secondly, in asking for reasons why late term should be kept as an option - not only do we need to take into consideration the health and well-being of the mother, but also of the child.  If a woman discovers late in the pregnancy that the fetus will be born with SEVERE deformities (meaning it has little to no chance of survival at birth, or life expectancy beyond a few days/weeks/months), then I believe that she should abort, or at the very least have the option.  Some people, I know, believe in the sanctity of life above all else, but I believe in quality of life.  This means that I would never artificially prolong a loved one's life, I believe in the right to assisted suicide, and I believe that not aborting a fetus that will have no quality of life is cruel.

Just my two little cents...  I am pro-choice, and to each his own, but a decision banning late-term abortion will be the beginning of a long slide down a slippery slope.  One thing this country does NOT need is the curtailing of more rights and freedoms.

i feel pretty sure that this will be decided in favor of a late-term abortion ban.  i think the balance of the court is now just too far right to go any other way.  i mean, you know Roberts and Alito will decide for a ban.  also, as far as Alito voting to stay that execution...i think he's of the Catholic/pro-life in all areas/anti-abortion, anti-euthanasia, anti-death penalty, etc. school of thought, even though abortion and the death penalty are usually opposed on opposite sides of the aisle.

personally, i would be very sad to see a ban enacted.  while i can't quite understand how you could wait that long to make a decision, as others have said, it's a slippery slope, once you ban late-term abortions, require parental notification (or worse - partner notification!), etc. etc., what else is there but a full scale ban?
