another hair stylist etiquette question!

my one stylist has 2 assistants.  mostly they just stand there as he prances around and makes me look fabu!

the only thing they do is shampoo me and apply the styling products.  they also walk me out at the end and show me the products they used.

say the hair cut is $60.  how much would you tip the stylist and how much (if any) would you tip the "assistant" that really doesn't do anything?

ugh...I hate trying to figure out tipping. I mean seriously...$60 for a cut and then you have to tip everyone? I hate it.

But I would like to know what is appropriate.

are they on the floor at all? or just in assistant capacity? at the salon i worked at, we have assistants, but also other stylists will help out if someone is running behind. if their job is only assisting, i would maybe give a dollar or two, but if it's another stylist, i wouldn't bother. (if i am helping someone else out when i have a minute or two, i don't expect a tip)

i guess i would also base this on how the shampoo is. if the shampoo is amazing, it warrants a bit more...but i see a lot of people rush through this (my favorite part when i get my hair done) and it pisses me off. also putting on products/assisting you at the desk and trying to hawk their products is really just serving their own agenda (commission) and not deserving of a tip, imho! but if they are blowdrying...that's a different story.

my stylist has an assistant who is only there sometimes, and i tip her kind of based on what she did each time (like erin is saying).  sometimes she blow-dries my hair (she does a great job) and sometimes she just washes it (also, great job).  i know she is in school to be a stylist herself, so i like to make sure to give her a little extra because i know she could probably use it since she doesn't have a lot of her own clients yet, and because she deserves it.

shampoo wasn't that great.  i've had better.

no blowdry- the stylist did that himself

i'll tell you what I tipped that day.  It was a $60 cut and I tipped the stylist $12 (20%) and the assistant $3.  good?  or not?
