I want to update my collection and was wondering what brands everyone liked. Both department store and drugstore. I'm mainly looking for nice neutrals to wear everyday... if you have a favorite shade that would be great too... I have fair skin, dark hair and brown eyes.

i like MAC and Bobbi Brown.

i haven't tried the Sonia Kashiuk line at Target (at least not the shadows) but i have one eyeshadow from Rimmel and it's pretty good, better than any other drugstore brands i've used, and really cheap.

Another vote for stila... I also got the spring colors in the 3 colors, and love them, dont want to wear any of my other shadows now!

Yet another vote for Stila. The shadows are velvety and silky and they stay on all day. I have fair skin and light brown hair, and I like kitten, wheat, grace, and barefoot and twig as liners (or on my whole lid if I'm going for a dramatic look).

i really like the new set of eyeshadows from pop beauty.  i have the brown eyes and i just ordered the green eyes, i can't wait for it to get here.  you get a ton of eyeshadows with it.  i also love pixi eyeshadows.  the colors are so pretty and so subtle.  of course you can amp them up, but even their brighter shades can be whisper soft.

I just got some Almay products for green eyes.  They really do make my eyes 'pop'!  They have them for blue and brown eyes, too.  The shadow and liner seem to last and stay in place.

I like Prescriptives for eyeshadows.  They have some great colors.

I was just going through this same thing. I wanted to get some new shades. I also have fair skin, dark hair, and brown eyes like you. This is what I ended up getting:

From Estee Lauder:

I also just ordered this, but I haven't gotten it yet:

Another vote for Stila. I've tried just about every eyeshadow out there and it's the best. I love kitten and espresso for liner. Also, any of Stila shadows can be used wet too, which is cool because it changes the color slightly and gives more of a sheen to the eyes.

I also like Lorac eyeshadows. They have great colors, are super easy to blend in, and they stay on all day. And they're very soft. Nice stuff.

As for drugstore, I've never really found anything that has the same quality as Stila and Lorac. Of course I buy some fun colors at the drugstore but nothing really stands out in my mind as exceptional. Oh wait! I thought of one. N.Y.C. has an eye shimmer powder container thing that really rocks. I use it all the time when I'm going for a natural look. It's in a pot thing where the lid screws off and it's a brush. You dip the brush into the pot and the shadow comes out on the brush. It's pretty cool.

I bought that Almay for brown eyes, and it may honestly be better than the Lancome, Prescriptives, or clinique shadows I've purchased in the past.  Sounds like I should try Stila, though!

I love Chanel Fluid Iridescent Eyeshadow.

Here's a description:

Named Best Eyeshadow by InStyle magazine's "Best Beauty Buys" and named a "Makeup Marvel" by Town & Country magazine. Fluid Iridescent Eyeshadow is an exceptionally lightweight liquid-to-powder formula that imparts a long-lasting veil of iridescent colour and prevents exaggerated lines and dry lids. This unique shadow allows your lids to take on different looks from subtle to intense colour. Made in France.

I have the Almay for hazel eyes and I love the top & bottom colors, very soft with just a hint of shimmer and very neutral. I've heard that you need the shadow base to go with this next one or it doesn't stay on but, Bare Escentuals shadow in "blush" really is a lovely shade of natural light pink. (My mom swears by that brand) I tried it yesterday at Sephora (along with a zillion other things)

Then I read in LUCKY today how mineral makeup doesn't really do anything for eye shadows or lips unless you have super sensitive skin. (It's the foundation that's got everyone raving.....) Definately makes me interested in trying out some Stila next time I'm there. Fresh I might also add has a wonderful "Satin Luster" collection out in what I think are the perfect natural shades. They feel beautiful to the touch & as with all Fresh products are wonderfully natural.....

MAC MAC MAC all the way! I think they have the best variety in terms of not only colour but also type (ie sparkly, subtle, matte) and they are really long lasting; I've never had them crease on me. Also, they now let you build your own palette of colours... so you get 4 eyeshadows that are the same size as regular shadows for cheaper plus you get to pick every colour-- totally a great thing, especially if you really want to bulk of your eyeshadow collection!
