What to wear on a cruise?
Permalink Closed

I am going on a cruise to Cozumel at the end of April with my best friend.  We both just turned 25 and this was our birthday gift to ourselves.  I can't wait and have been saving for awhile for the actual trip and for the shopping for the trip.  I am looking for ideas on what to buy for the cruise.  My day to day attire is jeans, t-shirt and tennis shoes because I work outside and on my feet all day long. For the 5 days of the cruise I want to dress but not be too dressy.  I want to feel pretty all week long.  Any suggestions.  I am a size 18 finally (it took a year but I dropped 3 sizes and am feeling so much better).  Thanks in advance!

Ok, maybe I have no business answering this because I have never personally gone on a cruise, but I have lots of friends and family that go and so I'm going off what they tell me.

You should bring a dress for fancy dinner/s, as much dress up or dress down stuff as you want, but mostly casual clothes for day.  I don't think you would be too dressed up if you were cute outfits as opposed to, say beach wear.  From what I gather it's pretty much anything goes and you should feel comfy in most things (obviously not business attire though).

HAVE FUN!

Cruises that I've been on.. tend to be VERY casual during the day.

Bathing Suit and coverup for excursions.. or shorts and a tshirt for exploring..

Dinner can be more formal. I usually dress up every night for dinner. It's a excuse to bring some skirts and dresses.

If you are anything like me, bring LOTS of clothes. I probably went through 3 outfits everyday because of all of the different things we are doing. I would also recommend layers.. it might be hot outside but cold in some of the bars on the ship. I was constantly putting on (and taking off) pashminis and cardigans all week long.

Hope that helps! You are going to have a great time!

I am planning on going on a cruise in april, here is what I have thought about packing:

2 bathing suites, some gauchos, tanks, cardigans, a hat(for the sun maybe), flip flops, one pair of dressier shoes, 2 dresses,  bermudas, basically the things that Jocey said.  I like the idea of dressing up for night since I don't on a normal basis.

I've been on several cruises, including a couple in the Carribbean. Cozumel is one of my favorite places. I bought a morganite stone and had it set there in a ring that I still wear a lot. Morganite is a pretty pale pink.

You will probably have one formal night for which you'd need a coctail dress. long dress or dressy pants outfit.

Be prepared for rain--tropical showers can come up quickly and pass quickly, leaving you soaked to the bone. They seem to happen the one day you leave your travel umbrella on the ship.

I always like to take a couple of casual skirts--cooler than pants in warm, humid weather. I also always take a wide-brimmed hat. You can't be sure you'll find a flattering one in the ship's store or the on-shore shopping areas.

We did a Caribbean cruise for our honeymoon. The other posters are right in that you will probably have at least one formal night (we had two, but our cruise was eight days long). Otherwise things were very casual.

One suggestion I have is to plan out what you are going to do ahead of time, if possible. The problem we ran into was that our cruise stopped at several different islands, and we packed for all options (pretty/dressy, athletic (hiking, biking, etc) and I ended up with clothes I didn't even use. If we'd narrowed our options before going on the cruise, I could have made do with a lot less clothes - and unless you've upgraded, those rooms are SMALL.

If you are merely wanting to shop while on the cruise, then I'd say pack your "feeling pretty" clothes, but if you are planning to do anything else, go rather casual. Our cruise involved a lot of laying on the beach, snorkeling, catamaran cruise / volleyball / more beach...and you'll be wet and in the sun all the time. The casual-surf (air/sun-dried hair, minimal makeup, non-fancy clothes) look works best, IMO.
