How much hair do you shed each day?
Permalink Closed

Ok, this is a weird question, but I'm starting to get a little paranoid.  I used to lose a handful of hair each day, maybe 20-50 strands when I rinsed it in the shower and put in some product.  But it seems like lately, I lose even more every day (maybe 100 strands??).  And I think I maybe shed more when my hair is longer.  Should I be concerned?  How much is normal?

I'm pretty sure I've read that losing about 100 strands a day is the average. I shed a lot of hair, too. Our shower drain clogs up once a week and it's definitely my hair that's causing it.

I can't even estimate how much hair I lose everyday... but I know it's lots. Probably 50-75 strands in the shower, then at least that much when I detangle afterward. I, too, was nervous that I was losing too much hair a couple of summers ago. I went to my dermatologist and he said that I have no need to worry about anything unless I'm losing 200 strands a day, everyday. It might give you peace of mind to go to your dermatologist, but based on my experience, I don't think you have anything to be paranoid about.

I actually thought that I was going bald from the chlorine in my pool. Even after the derm assured me that everything was fine, I still wouldn't go in. This was the summer of 2004, and I haven't got my hair wet in a pool since then. I don't think I ever will again... talk about being paranoid

i lose tons of hair a day, so i think its normal.. but if you have noticed a sudden increase, maybe something you have changed is causing it- a new hair product? also, i read that if you don't eat enough (good) fat, you can start to lose your hair.

I think I lose 100 strands a day. I lose tons in the shower, and throughout the day I find hair on everything. It boggles my mind that we can lose that much and it doesn't make a difference! I remember going ot the dermatologist about it years ago and she said it was normal, but that sometimes if you're under usual stress, it makes you shed more.

I've read that it's normal, too. I shed so much, so I know how you feel. It's even worse because I have super thin hair.
