Another weight/cardio workout question
Permalink Closed

Since Jen has brought up the point about cardio only being 20% of the big picture of sculpting your body... Ive been questioning my workouts and how beneficial are they in reality?

My school work and daily schedule is pretty intense and i really dont have much free time, but i do like to run at night, more so to relax and escape from the busy day... But i do also do it to stay healthy and hopefully shed a few pounds.  But since everyone has been talking on here about having to combine cardio with weight training, ive been feeling like me just running for an hour is really not very helpful in the scheme of things (losing a few pounds and tightening things up).  I dont really have the time/energy/effort to start a weight training routine or anything, i just like to run for the relaxtion factor... so my question is.. is what im doing have any benefit whatsover, or am i just wasting my time as far as trimming up my body?

IMO any exercise you do is beneficial to your body, and it sounds like your running is also beneficial for your state of mind.

How many days a week are you running currently?

well up until this week i was running like 5-6 times a week...

I haven't really seen any changes as far as loss of weight or anything over time, except for when i get super busy at school and dont have time to eat.

I am average height/weight, i think.  Im 5'4 and about a size 4/6 so i realize that its probably harder to lose or see any weight change, but id like to decrease the size of my thighs and tighten my stomach.

So maybe some workout suggestions for that?  Or if running will help with that?

Like Elle said, any type of exercise that gets your heart rate up is beneficial for your body and not a waste of time!  You will burn fat, but it's going to be a lot slower and more difficult w/out doing some sort of weight training.

My BF is a personal trainer and he has me do cardio a few times a week and I also do a weight routine & an ab workout - I'm happy w/my body and not looking to lose weight - just tone up, so what I do is not very time consuming or intense.  If you want to know more, I can PM you later w/the routine he has me do!

Honestly then, I'd cut the running down to 2-3 times per week (and throw some intervals in there while you're at it) and then do weights 2 times a week on days you don't run.  That way it doesn't take up any more of your time, and you'll see some changes to boot.
