how about some magazines, cross word puzzle books, books to read, does she have any hobbies? Not sure if bringing a dvd player is an option but if it is definetly pack that and some happy movies.

my mother has been fighting cancer for a good ten years now. when she's in the hospital, I usually put together a big basket for her - little snacks like tiny gourmet cookies, and little packs of gourmet savory snacks, word search and crossword puzzles, frivolous magazines - like tabloids, town and country, people, in style, a book, a pair of super soft slippers, hand lotion, lip balm... stuff like that - treats, papering stuff, and frivolous reading...

I'm not sure the difference between radiation and chemo but when my grandma was going through her rounds of chemo she always complained about food from cans or ingredients from cans making her food taste like metal. Just a little tip in case you do send snacks or make food for her try not to use stuff from cans. jars were much better for her.

I really didn't think about the food thing, or a manicure set! I'm not sure about the whole "tasting like metal" thing, but I'll keep that in mind. Thanks again.

radiation is radioactive waves focused on an area to kill cells and inhibit cell growth - it often results in burning and irritation of the skin. chemo is chemicals that poison the body and kill cells - basically it's like poisoning you as much as they can without killing you to kill off cells and inhibit cell growth. chemo can alter your senses - especially smell and taste.

Some stationary to write to people, or some phone cards so she doesn't pay hotel phone rates might be nice. Some take out menus from around the area, any craft that she has been meaning to try or is involved in, a few pictures for her to take to remind her of her family, maybe a plant to liven it up. Her own blanket (the hotel ones are so icky and scratchy) and pillow, any pamper item, an aromatherapy candle or aromatherapy something (maybe not an open flame), one of those eye masks so she can nap...

I'll keep thinking.

When is she going to start staying at hotel rooms? I too wish her the best of luck and I will keep her in my thoughts!

I like the idea of some photographs of her family. You could frame some so that she can put them around the room.

Stationary is also a good idea.

How about a little electronic game of tetris?

A radio or you could make her a cd with her favorite songs so that she can listen to them.

I think they usually have a tv in the rooms so maybe some casettes or dvds depending on what they have.

I will try to think of some more!
