easy makeover ideas

I want to give my friend a little mini makeover. She is a single mom and could use some va-va-va-voom! I want her to look like a 25 year old should.

We plan on dying her hair and doing a manicure. But what can we do for fashion? She doesn't have much money so buying a new outfit is probably out of the question. What else can I do to help her look her best?

I think the key to a successful (ie long-term) makeover is subtle changes.  You're not going to have a lasting impact on someone if she's a sweatpants and sweatshirt kinda gal and you go out and buy miniskirts and tube tops.

What's her style like right now?  I think a lot of people miss the mark when it comes to clothes because of fit issues.  A good pair of jeans at the right length, some cute tanks and hoodies, and sleek sneakers or comfy shoes would be a good start for a mom.  I'd stay away from any dangly earrings (so the kid doesn't grab them and rip out the hole in the ear.  )  Some cute espadrilles for the spring/summer would also be good shoes because not only are they cute, but a wedge heel is pretty easy to walk in, especially if she's chasing around a young kiddo.  HTH!

Is there a decent consignment shop in your area?  Sometimes just a basic tank with a great necklace can do the trick.  I will try to think of other ideas.

maybe go through her closet and help her find new ways to wear her clothes and just get her a couple of fun accessories for that extra something.

I think this is a fab idea.  I also second the consignment store suggestion - or maybe you could even take her thrifting?

But seriously, I think if you go over to her house and just help her invent some new ways to combine what she already owns, it would probably have the most lasting results.

does she wear makeup?  they say throwing in a new color is a good way to spice up a new look.  Or, if she doesn't, try to convince her to wear some mascara and blush.  Or if she wears to much makeup, well, you know "make under"

What about an eye-brow make over? they say that is the biggest change anyone can make.  Even if she gets them professionally (or if you're good at it) once, she can just pluck the re-growth afterwards.

When you finish with her can you come make over me?  *wink*

I just think it's so great that you are doing this!  Not many people think that we single mom's really do need all the help we can get.  So props to you for being an awesome friend!

A nice haircut always goes a long way if she hasn't had one. Also, if she has a lot of basics then a cheaper way to update her look is to invest in stylish accessories and maybe a few trendy pieces from a place like forever21 that won't break the bank.

Maybe if her bday or something is coming up, you can get her a subscription to Lucky or whatever other fashion mag you like. Then you two can discuss it and you can make suggestions about what ideas she can take from the mag to keep her look fresh all year.

I think it's super nice that you're doing this for her!
