How long should I stay at a job?
Permalink Closed

As you all know, I want to move to California.  I took the job I'm at now b/c I needed a job in my field (hell, I needed a job, I was temping before).  I like my job and I like the people.  I hate (from the very core of my being) where I'm living.  I'm bored senseless.  I need a place with a little more going on than cows and farmland.

So, how long would you say I need to stay at this job to get experience before I relocate?  I don't want to look like a jobhopper, but I also don't want to stay in this area forever either.  Thoughts?

I would stay for at least 8 months.  I think otherwise it looks like you are noncommittal...

I was going to suggest a year and to then start looking.  I think people now a days expect you not to stay at a job/place until you retire and that you will have multiple jobs/employment places.  I don't think its as negative as it use to be and I wouldn't worry too much unless you held 10 jobs in the last 2 years or something like that.

I think a year or 2 is good.I've been w/ the company I'm with for a little over three years (1st job out of college).I was relocated after 10 months- so I've been at this store for a little over 2 years.I done- meaning time for me start looking for something else.My boss has worked for the company for 25 yrs- what a nut.I really believe that loyalty gets you no where and like someone else said people don't epect you to work for a company until you need a seeing eye dog.

Plus I think that's the only way you actually see your pay jump- when you leave companies.Good luck when you do start searching.

if you stay for a year, no one these days would ever question your loyalty.

Ditto.  I think a year is ideal.
