I just saw the story on CNN about the 20th anniversary of the Challenger accident. I can't believe it was that long ago because I remember it so vividly. But I wasn't even 6 years old. It's crazy how quickly time really passes.

I remember that day.  I was in 5th grade.  For some reason, I was home from school.  Maybe it was a Saturday.  Shuttle launches and landings were a much bigger deal back then, and I remember sitting by the television in the den with my dad, mom and younger sister.  I remember it vividly.  I was horrified.

If you're old. then I'm ancient. I was a freshman in college when it happened. I remember not believing it at first. So awful.

Was it a Saturday?  I don't remember when it happened but I remember talking about it on the merry-go-round at my preschool, so maybe kids were just talking about it the Monday after.  I was 4.

No, now that I think of it, it wasn't a Saturday because all of my school friends had seen it happen in the classroom.  My husband said he saw it at school too.  So I must have just been playing hooky!

I think it happened early in the morning before school started (central standard time). I remember watching it and then heading off to kindergarden, where I told a huge lie to all of my friends about how my dad was supposed to be on the shuttle, but I begged him not to go, and so he didn't.

I was a pretty big hero that day....

I was in 5th grade, too.  I remember my teacher coming in the room saying, "Class, something terrible has happened," and then we all went to the library to watch it on the news.  So I don't think it was very early, but it could have been a little after lunchtime (central time).

I must be ancient too, I was in my junior year of college and found out about it inbetween classes and was totally shocked.

Now who remembers when Ronald Reagan and Jim Brady were shot in that assasination attempt?

Wow!  I can't believe it has been so long.

I was in 6th grade.  One of the other teachers came into our classroom and whispered something to our teacher.  Then they both burst into tears.  They were crying so hard they couldn't even explain to the class what was going on.  I remember that it was really uncomfortable for about 10 minutes because it was clear that something horrible had happened, but the teachers couldn't get it together to tell us.

I do! Though I'm sure that comes as no surprise, given my advanced years. *s*

Gosh, I have very vague recollections of this.  I had just turned 5 and wasn't even in kindergarten yet.  I remember seeing it on the news and all and I remember it being sad, but I think I was just too young for it to have any impact on me at the time.

I'm really ancient because I was working at my first job auditing a private school and we watched it live on TV with the kids

I can't believe that was 20 years ago.  I remember I was home that day, and I decided to watch a live shuttle launch for the first time, since it was the only thing on TV (this was in the infancy of cable.) So the shuttle took off uneventfully everyone was happy and cheering, and then it just exploded.  it was hard to comprehend - you want to think what you just saw didn't happen - I remember how they kept putting the camera on the family members in the stands at the moment it exploded - they all just had this really blank look on their faces - I kept saying quit showing them - I felt they were being violated even though they weren't showing emotion - but I wondered why they weren't showing emotion - they were in shock... it was unreal.  within moments I called my mother at work to tell her what had happened.  I never saw the footage of the family members in the stands again - and I'm still to this day surprised, since human suffering seems to be what the media jumps on the most - I'm wondering if the government asked the media to suppress that footage since it did nothing but put the space program in a negative light. I'm glad I never saw the footage of the families again - but I remember it all very vividly.

I always feel guilty remembering it because I faked sick (like I did all the time back then) and got to stay home from school that day...I was watching it on tv at home, I was in 4th grade and I didn't really grasp what was going on but I couldn't believe it.

Yes this 20th anniversary makes me feel pretty old even though I am only 30.

Interestingly, I was also faking sick and staying home from a community college course when the Oklahoma City bombing happened, and I lived only about 2 hrs away in Tulsa.  That I missed because I was sleeping in, I remember my mom called and woke me up to tell me it had happened and to turn on the tv asap.  I remember friends from KU had asked me if I "felt" the bomb from where I was that day.
