Banana Republic price adjustments
Permalink Closed

So...I bought a sweater on Jan. 7 for around $45. With all the crazy clearances, it went down another $15 or so. I live about an hour from BR, so I didn't have time to go in for a price adjustment. I was nearby today, so I thought it was perfect, since it has been exactly 14 days since I bought the item. So I ask for a price adjustment, and Mr. Snooty BR Guy tells me it has been more than 14 days.

So I show him the receipt, showing I bought it Jan. 7. I remind him that today is Jan. 21, and 7+14=21. He says "the 14 days include the day you bought the item."

WTH? So I am eligible for a price adjustment on the same day I bought it? Ugh.

Oh, that's terrible. I would think that you would be able to get your price adjustment. I never knew that the 14 days included the day you bought them. That doesn't seem right. The SA sounds like a complete ass btw.

I e-mailed their customer service. They said, "Unfortunately, we cannot make exceptions to the 14-day adjustment period for any customer." WTF! I didn't ask for an exception, I asked that they follow their own policy! I replied, "I purchased the item on Jan. 7, and tried to get an adjustment on Jan. 21. Can you please explain how this is not 14 days?"

Ugh. I don't even want my money back, I just need them to say that that stupid guy was wrong.

I'll post their response. I am sure it will be equally inane, though.

I can't understand why the day you buy an item is included in the 14 days... that is absurd!

I cant believe they wouldnt help you. If you keep complaining, I'm sure you will get some response from a higher-up. I have nothing but good things to say about BR's customer service.

here's their second email:

Dear [Halleybird]:

Thank you for taking the time to contact our corporate offices and for
sharing your frustration with our company's price adjustment guidelines.

We happily offer a one-time price adjustment as a courtesy to our
customers for items marked-down within 14 days of the original date of
purchase and accompanied by the original receipt; however, please be
advised that the date of purchase is counted as the first day of the
14-day period
.  We have made a Company decision to adhere to the terms
of the 14-day time limit at every level of our organization to be fair
to all of our customers. [bolding is mine]

They then offered me a $20 gc "as an invitation to shop with us again." But I find this policy so weird. Why would you include the date the item was purchased in the adjustment period? It makes no sense; I can't think of how you'd need an adjustment on the day it was purchased, since markdowns are done after hours. Why not just call it a 13-day policy?

I feel like I would be sacrificing my dignity if I took the gc, but then again, it makes up for the $ I should have gotten for the price adjustment. Do you think I should take it, and then say something like, "although I am grateful for this gesture, I would like to note that I still find the language of your policy misleading" ?

take the GC and let them know their policy is stupid (or rather "misleading" as you worded so much better HB!  darn english teacher )

next time, i would make them do the return it and rebuy it deal... that way- everyone wins!

Eh, dignity schmignity!    It's 20 bucks.  I'd take it.  I like the way you worded your response about their misleading policy.  Very nice.

thats lame that they didnt do it anyway. i wonder if their computers wouldn't let them. if they just buy it then rebuy it back- like a lot of stores do for price adjustments, then it would be at the discretion of the employee. and the fact that they didn't give you an extra day is absurd.

Well, I guess they put 14 days because that is 2 weeks.  If you have the days starting the day after you purchased the item, that could put it into 3 different sales, obviously the 3rd week being marked down significantly.  But to avoid confusion they should just say 13 days.

I would take the gift certificate as payment for having to deal with all of this crap. They are being extremely picky about the whole thing. I could see if you brought it back 15 days later, but being that the wording is very confusing, I don't see why they could not make an exception. I say boycott BR!!! LOL!!! I am the queen of boycotting. I once boycotted Dillards for years because they upset me and I still rarely buy anything there.
