Help me fill a baby shower basket
Permalink Closed

So I anticipate being invited to a baby shower soon... the new mom is a fellow law student who is about 3 weeks away from her due date.  (It's her last semester of school, too, so her life is about to get real interesting, poor thing...)  We're not close friends, but we're both on law review together, so I guess you could say we have a friendly working relationship.

Anyway, I'd like to give her a little basket of fun and useful stuff.  I'm already planning to include newborn diapers (is any particular brand better than the others? or all they all really the same?) and 2 packs of onesies (3-6 mths and 6-9 mths, since she says she has enough newborn stuff).  I'd like to include a couple more things and am hoping for ideas.

I especially want to include something small and semi-indulgent for the new mom.  What kind of gift would she appreciate?  (I'm thinking some warm fuzzy socks, a small box of chocolates, a hot water bottle, or cooling eye gel to minimize the puffiness after a long night... am I on the right track?)

Thanks!

Well I think that's a great idea, what a nice gift.

As for newborn diapers I am a huge fan of Huggies. My friend told me that's because I had a girl, she says Huggies are for girls and Pampers work better for boys, not sure it's fact but though I'd share. I know the hospital I'm delivering at uses Pampers Swaddlers for newborns.

Other things that are quite practical for newborns, baby gas drops, baby tylenol, these are things you never get until you need them, and usually that's the middle of the night with a crying baby. With my first I used cloth diapers for a myrid of things, so they came in handy.

As for a gift for Mom, I think that's a bit personal. But think of her and what is something that might be important to her to make her feel "normal" after baby is born. For me I told my husband I need to be able to shower and fix my hair even on the roughest baby days. So I really need my expensive shampoo/conditioner/styling product fix. It's something I can do for me without feeling like I'm neglecting the baby.

So the invitation came today, as I expected.  Fortunately, I've been doing some more thinking, and I've devised a plan.

A small basket like this:

Woven Baskets Set of 3 (Free Gift W Purchase)

A box of newborn diapers:

Huggies Baby-Shaped Diapers with Gigglastic Waistband, Size 6 (over 35 lb), Disney, 92 diapers

(Thanks for the advice, itsapinkthing... she's having a girl)

A pack of washable diapers (I think she wants to use these as burp cloths; I'll embroider them, too, to make them fun):

Washable Prefolded Diapers 6 Pack - White

Some onesies (these have Pooh on them):

Classic Pooh 2-pc. Bodysuit Set - Pink White

Some baby Tylenol (which flavor did your little ones like?  Or does it matter?):

Tylenol Concentrated Infants' Drops -- 1 fl oz

And a little bag full of nail care goodies for mom (itsapinkthing:  I see what you're saying about the beauty thing, but I really have no idea what kind of hair or makeup products are her favs.... I was thinking about some nice body wash or something instead, but some people are sensitive to fragranced things, so this is my compromise...):

-  nail files

-  cutile oil

-  hand cream (probably that little intense tube of Neutrogena)

-  buffing block (no way she'll have time to paint her nails with the little one)

How does all this sound?

Another thing...I am always the only one to give this to someone at a baby shower: Books. Definitey add some waterproof or board books in there. The mother always appreciates that because it's practical and there are some really cute ones out there. Plus, you can get some that match your color scheme.
