I eat Hummus almost daily. The base is made with Garbanzo beans (chickpeas) olive oil, lemon juice and Tahini, and the flavor is pretty mild. The base is usually combined with other things to add more flavor. I live mine with garlic, roasted peppers or olives. I put it on everything - pita, crackers, bagels, veggies, etc.
The health factor kind of depends on how you make it. I don't use much olive oil in mine, but I know some people who use tons, which ups the fat content a little bit.
If you do a search on Calorieking.com, it'll give you a breakdown of the contents of a few different brands.
I LOVE tabouli. One of my good friends is Arabic and her grandmother's is to die for... she finely chops parsley, tomatoes, cucumber, onions, garlic, and mixes it with cracked wheat, olive oil and lemon juice. I don't have an exact recipe but you can also buy it a lot of upscale grocery stores... I don't like Whole Foods but Eatzi's is good. You can also buy pre-packaged versions in delis but it's never as fresh as homeade.
As for being healthy, it has fat in it (because of the olive oil) but it's healthy fat. My favorite ways to eat it are plain (like a salad) or in a pita pocket with turkey.
I also like hummus, but I would never eat that on its own. I enjoy hummus but I CRAVE tabouli.
nicoley, are you thinking of tahini and not tabouli? imo, tabuli is more of a side dish while tahini is much more like hummus in that you can use it as a spread or a dip.

Hummus rocks! It is a staple for me, I eat it w/baby carrots(and other crudites) or tortilla chips. It's healthy and a little goes a long way. Pita and hummus is really good too. I haven't had tabouli in ages, but it's pretty good. FYI tabouli is a salad and hummus is a dip.
I love hummus, but I like it better homemade (or housemade at my local organic foods market) than if you make it with a package. It has tons of flavor, and compliments veggies really well, so it's a really good way to add a lot of "yum" to a vegetarian sandwich or something. Like a couple others said, it has olive oil in it, so it has fat, but olive oil is good fat, and you can probably reduce the amount, so it will end up being a relatively good snack (plus, you get protein from the chickpeas which is always a good thing). As for tabouli, I've had it as a salad, not really a dip, and I don't like the texture, so I don't eat it.

i love both. i really like homemade tabouli, but i prefer it without cucumbers. it's great by itself. my mom has a friend from lebanon and she makes it with parsley, onions, tomatoes, lemon juice, and bulgar wheat. she also adds some cinnamon to take out some of the onions kick.
hummus is really good too, and thanks to the st girls i've started eating it with carrots as a snack. the carrots are really an excuse for me to just eat hummus. i think most store brands don't use tahini in their hummus mixes. my fav. types of hummus are roasted red pepper (so good, cedar's is the brand i buy), and this one by tribe, 40 spices. it's awesome.
i'm a big fan of hummus but use my own recipe for it which ends up being pretty healthy. and like the other girls, i usually eat w/ carrots.
here's the recipe if you're interested
1 can chickpeas
2 tbsp tahini/sesame paste (i usually drain the oil off the top to reduce the fat factor)
2 tbsp lemon juice
2 cloves garlic - i like mine garlicky
2 tbsp plaid lowfat yogurt
i reserve the chickpea water/juice and add in the blender as blending the ingredients together. i usually end up using about 1/2 cup - depends on how chunky/creamy you like your hummus.

How long does it take you to make this? And how much does it make?
Anyone else have recipes that are different?
I LOVE hummus but I've never made it myself. I like Tom's brand but that's a local Austin thing I think. I eat it with carrots and pita bread. It's sooo yummy!! I want some now!!
