i took him to his doctor today for another reason and i happend to mention to her that he's been having bad breath for a couple of weeks and she told me i should have brought him in when i first noticed it, that it was probably an infection. sure enough, she checks out his throat and he has a throat infection. maybe she was pmsing, cause shes usually such a sweetheart!?! the way she told me that made me feel like an idiot, like not a good mother! btw, my son's 3.
okay, just had to vent.....
shit, now everytime my son has bad breath i'll take his butt in to see her!
Sorry you had to deal with the doctorly condescending. Isn't it great how they can make us feel like we shouldn't be raising these kids?!? :( But hey...on the cool side, that means our boys are close in age! And now I know to check his breath from time to time also!
please dont feel bad, you are not a idiot, you are a good mom. She's the dr. not you, although I know you would not ingore this if you thought it was something serious along with anything else. But now you know that bad breath could be a infection. Hugs to you
ew. I would never think that bad breath deserved a trip to the doctor! even at 3, he's old enough to complain or somehow else let it be known that he wasn't feeling well... he couldn't have been in too much pain! How were you supposed to know?!
That sucks she was rude. Who would have known that bad breath was a sign of infection??? That's really lame of her to assume you would have known that and to make you feel bad about it.
You're a great mom--don't let her make you think you're not.
WTF--I swear I feel like with doctors it's "damned if you do, damned if you don't" sometimes. Who goes to the doctor for BAD BREATH?? And who's to say that if you DID go in for the breath issue that they wouldn't roll their eyes and tell you you were being an overly cautious mom! You can't win! I totally understand your frustration, and you should not have been trated that way. As you can probably tell, I've been a little irritated with doctors lately!

EXACTLY! I would absolutely find a new doctor - the fact that she felt it was okay to treat you that way doesn't say much for her, and I wouldn't want her to be the one to make decisions about my kids healthcare after that. Any doctor that discounts your opinions or speaks condescendingly EVER is sooooo outta there!

my 2 year old has bad breath all the time because she really doesn't know how to brush her teath proppely yet. i though all kid did until they learned to brush better.
and doesn't it allways seem like they can go for weeks without getting a scratch or a bump or something and then the night before or the day of the appointment, they get hurt playing or something and the doctors look at you like a child beater. i hate that.
that's interesting, I once brought my son in when he was taking forever to get over a cold and one of the reasons I mentioned was because his breath smelled, so I assumed he had a sinus infection or infection somewhere. The pediatrician told me that wasn't an indicator....of course, he almost always shrugged off my concerns, so I ended up finding a more experienced doctor anyway.
Eventually, that breath went away, I still think he had some drainage because babies aren't supposed to have bad breath, but whatever.
