Have we not talked about Lost yet today?  What is the deal?

Really really liking Jack after tonight's episode.  I like that Jack semi-cheated on his wife - makes him more human, not so goody goody (not that kissing another woman when you are married is EVER ok).  Oh, and I LOVE that he is starting an army - how Lord of the Flies.

I also liked that he has stoped baby-ing Kate.  She f'ed up.  It was her fault.  I am annoyed with her character altogether.

But, WTF is the deal with the bearded man?

I agree with you about Jack - I've always liked his character, but knowing this particular part of the backstory made him much more sympathetic IMO (especially the part about his wife leaving him ... I'd been wondering).

But, okay, if you met a scary bearded man in the jungle who was kidnapping/murdering people left and right, who then accused you of taking food that wasn't yours and going places that weren't yours, wouldn't you explain to him that you'd gladly leave if you could and meant them no harm?  That you'd do your best to stay out of their way?  To stay off 'their land' as much as possible?  Seems like someone would have pled their case a little more, even if the Others would have been less than sympathetic ...

Hahaa!  Totally agree.  They weren't acting scared......it was a strange reaction to the bearded man.  Btw, didn't Sawyer call the bearded man "Zeke"?  Was that a new nickname, or did I make this up?

I think it was just a Sawyer-ism, because I don't see how he could have known the guys name really.  I'm sure it has some 'deeper meaning' though with the writers!

i kind of took his "how long does it take to train an army" question to mean that he was trying to figure out how long zeke and his people had been there.  but it could have been taken either way.

also, how did they know his name was zeke? did he tell anyone? or did sawyer know him from somewhere else (like before the island)? also, the makeup job on zeke made him look as if he had spent some time face-down on a barbecue--maybe lighten up a bit next time, makeup crew.

and also, i still dislike kate.  that will never go away.

You know what really bugs me?  That Claire's baby looks waaaaaaay older than he should, considering that they've only been only the island for 50 days and she gave birth there.  Technicality, but still .

And the new Charlie story they've been alluding to makes me sad - we thought he was doing so well !

I took the "How long does it take to train an army?" question as Jack hatching a plan to attack the Others .....

yeah, i think maybe it was meant to be taken one of two ways--either jack wants to attack the others (based on his aggression towards zeke, sounds likely) or he wants to figure out how long they've been there.  i think maybe both.

Definitely did. But that's just Sawyer's character. During any given episode he makes up at least 5 nicknames.  Last night, he called Locke, 'Mr. Clean.'  The nicknames he comes up with are hysterical.

Anyway...the bearded guy is the same guy that took Walt on the boat (just clarifying in case anyone missed that).  When he was holding Kate hostage, the person he told to get Kate was "Alex." That was Danielle's child's name, so, maybe it's her.

I think that there's a possibility that 'Zeke' and the people that he's with aren't The Others.  He just doesn't seem like the Others that took some of the Tailies.  If they were the same group, wouldn't they have just taken Walt in the night, like what happened to the Tailies? Why take him by force with guns and make-shift bombs?

I love, love, love Jack! Love him.  And last night's episode made me love him more.  I love how he responded to Kate, too.  It's gone from her having the upper hand to him having the upper hand in that little thing that they have.

I'm convinced that Michael has the sickness.  No question. He's losing it.  His eyes looked all crazy last night.

Just when I think this show can't get any better, it does! Last night was great!

I seriously can't get enough of this show...I'm desperately going through my Season 1 DVDs so my opinion doesn't count for much BUT...

This episode was definitely one of the best I've seen.  It was so crazy when Jack was like I think it's just you and one guy with a gun and then they all lit up their torches.  If "Zeke" and his guys aren't the others, then how many groups are there on the island?  We have the 815 people, the others, Danielle, Hatch people, and ____?  How big is this island anyway?

Oh my gosh, there's so much stuff from last night's episode:

1)  I liked learning more about Jack too.  It was really telling that his wife said "You always need to have something to fix"--very true to his character.  His backstory definitely made him more sympathetic.  I thought it was interesting too that his dad knew what was going on--it made his dad more sympathetic as well, which makes their relationship a lot more complex.

2)  I took the army question to mean that Jack wants to train an army to fight the others.  It could have been taken another way, but the fact that they ended the episode on that hanging question seems to imply that that's what's coming next.

3)  I think that "Zeke" is definitely from "the Others."  a)  They have Alex.  b)  They have Walt.  c)  They move soundlessly--Zeke standing there caught everyone off guard and the fact that Jack, Sawyer, and Locke were completely surrounded without having a clue to me implies that those are indeed the Others.

4)  I totally agree w/ Elle--if this were real life, you'd at least take your time to plead your case.  "Oh sorry, we landed here as the result of a plane crash and we're just trying to survive.  Let's see if we can come to an agreement.  And by the way, can we please have the kids back?"  That would have been more realistic, but definitely not as intense.

5)  I think Michael's definitely sick too.  He looked downright freaky last night.

6)  I love Jin and Sun.  Jin grows on me more and more.  I love that he can see Michael for being a good person and a good dad instead of just holding a grudge against him for their past.

7)  Next week--did the Others take Aaron?!?!?!  I'm going to be super upset if that's the case.  I really don't want Charlie to start using again.  The fact that he's stashing all the Virgin Marys makes me concerned.  I want him and Claire to live happily ever after (and of course now that I say that, it's probably not going to happen.  )

Great episode last night.  I can't wait until Season 2 comes out on DVD so I can obsess over it.

I really didn't even care about the Kate/Jack issues other than being disappointed in Jack for ignoring his wife's needs, I was too interested in WHY the heck didn't somebody, like Locke, just ASK the bearded guy ANYTHING???  Maybe a simple, "How did you get here?  What do you want from us?  or Hey, It's not like we wanted to be on your island in the first place, dude!?"  Sorry, but I found the whole dialogue rather unbelievable.

I was really glad the bearded guy reappeared at all though, I wasn't expecting that at all, but I am ultimately disappointed that we couldn't get anything more revealed than well....he has a lot of buddies on his island.  I want to know more...and shouldn't we know more by now, this season is moving along super slow.

me too, lorelei--i wanted them to get zeke to talk and give up some info!

and i totally didn't put the "alex" thing together--so cool.  i wonder if that is danielle's kid? and whatever happened to danielle anyway? where did she go? we sort of lost track of her after the hatch was discovered...right?

Do we know if Alex is a boy or a girl?  I'd always assumed it was a boy, but I can't remember from last night because I feel like we didn't get a good shot of him/her.

I think it's been clarified that Alex was a girl. I'm not positive, though.

Wait, was there an actual show on last night? Because I feel like I watched about 45 minutes of commercials.

Anyhoo, my thoughts:

  • Good Jack backstory. I don't even like him that much, but as you all said, he seems more human now.

  • Kate is annoying. I wanted to tell her, you don't have to be in the middle of everything! Leave them alone and go hang out in the hatch!

  • Am I the only one who would have liked to see Jack and Locke stuck alone together for a longer period of time? I like to watch them debate.

  • The others were sort of a letdown. I was expecting them to be all scary and mysterious, and they weren't.

  • I love Sawyer's nicknames.

  • I think NylaBelle is right on about Michael and the sickness.

  • I still love Hurley's scenes.

  • I am glad they didn't forget about Jin and Sun's issues...nice to see them actually dealing with them somewhat and not just getting all "happily ever after"

  • I like that Vincent has adopted Ana Lucia.

Agreed - Sawyer definitely has nicknames.  But they are always very obvious - freckles, Doc, Mr. Clean.  What does Zeke mean?

And Nyla, I am beginning to agree with you.  I am not fully convinced that Mr. Beard + Co are Others.  Perhaps they are so militant to protect themselves from the Others mysterious ways.  And they steal children to raise them as perfect little soldiers.  ------> Stealing this thought from bumblebee b/c it is a good one -----> Perhaps Jack was wondering how long it takes to train an army b/c he was thinking that Mr. Beard has trained his army from children?  I dunno...just a guess.

I think Sawyer just picked it b/c the guy was all burly with a bushy old beard and so he looked like a Zeke (kind of a redneck type of look, I guess).

Here are a few other names he's used:

Jin: Chewy, Mr. Miyagi

Sayid: Muhammed

Shannon: Legs, Sticks

Jack: Metro

Hurley: Pillsbury

I agree, I think Sawyer called him Zeke because it's kind of a redneck, backwoods name, and this guy is most definitely backwoods. Ugh, his face was so grimy! Looking at the show, I was thinking "you know that guy would smell bad."

Nice catch on the Alex thing! Rousseau definitely referred to Alex as her daughter, so if that was a girl, then that must be her.

Finding out more of Jack's backstory made me like him more. It was refreshing to see he wasn't so perfect, and also why his marriage fell apart.

During that whole confrontation, I kept waiting for someone to say "hey, we didn't have a choice about being here." I definitely took Jack's question about armies to mean he wanted to prepare to fight back, although you'd think he'd ask Sayid for help too, considering he was a Republican Guard.

Wouldn't it be hilarious/awesome if Hurley really got with Libby? I noticed in last week's episode that she gave him a very big smile when he helped with her shelter on the beach.

I was reading on another board and read an interesting theory:  what if Kate is helping the others?  Last season she did the whole damsel in distress thing at the bank, when really she was just part of the scam.  This episode she did almost the exact same thing.  I'm not sure why she would do that, but maybe the others made some kind of deal with her?

yeah exactly! Or how about, "Why do you kidnap people? Why do you kill people? Who the hell are you?" It makes no sense that he wouldn't try to ask those questions, even if he didn't expect them to be answered.

Also, I think his wife sucks. "You don't pay attention to me" is the oldest, most pathetic excuse for having an affair ever. I have no sympathy for her.
