Layering tanks: Old Navy vs. J Crew
Permalink Closed

I want to stock up on some layering tanks and I'm curious about Old Navy's, since they're cheaper than J. Crew's.  I have some J. Crew tanks in size small. Does anyone know if the small ON tanks are the same size as the J. Crew smalls?  Also, how do the ON ones hold up after a lot of washing and wearing?  My J. Crew tanks get worn and washed a lot and their color is still great.  TIA!

i prefer the fit of the j. crew tanks to the old navy ones.  the j.crew tanks i have are slightly longer than my old navy ones.  i want to say size wise they are similar.  i think i have an xs in both, possibly a s from old navy but definitely an xs from j.crew.

i also really like the target version of the favorite tank.  they are also long but and are lower cut.

I have a few JCrew tanks which have held up well, and a few ON tanks which have held up equally well. You may have noticed in the latest weekend shopping that I bought a couple of the "long layering" ON tanks -- basically I went back for more after I got some of those a couple of weeks ago. The material is supersoft and thin, but not see-through, and they hit below my hips. I love them, and the low price is just an added bonus.

I don't know about jcrew tanks, but I'm not the biggest fan of ON. The ones that I've bought always seem to lose their shape and stretch.

My old navy tanks have lost their shape after a while. They are all stretched out funny after a year of wear.

My JCrew tanks are still in perfect shape.. and I wear them a ton. (I usually have one on everyday)

I love my J.Crew favorite tanks.  My ON ones are okay for the price, but the fit and quality are not as good.  Actually, I was folding an ON tank last night and I noticed a two inch rip at the seam under the arm.  Good thing they were $7.

I have some of the ON ones, and I find that they're a little too long form my needs. They are pretty thin (in a cheap way). The second time I wore one of them I noticed there was a rip in the fabric by one of the side seams. I took it back for a new one. I'm not sure if I bought it that way or not, but falling apart after one wear, WTF?

I got a few Target ones b/c they were on clearance, and I like those better. A little thicker, and a little shorter (perfect length for me). The straps were narrower than the ON ones.

I agree. I wouldn't count on ON tanks lasting more than a season.

well, i guess im gonna be the lone dissenter here. i actually prefer my old navy tanks to my jcrew tanks. now...i have the tissue ones from jcrew and they are actually too thin for me, they actually don't wear very well because the shoulder straps are all stretched out somehow. and they fit funny around my chest. but i love my old navy tanks, you just have to be careful and get the longer version. there are two almost identical versions, one is longer and thinner than the other and that's the one i get. the old navy ones actually hit at a much better spot on my than the jcrew ones too. i would actually tell you to try both and see what you like better. perhaps buy a brighter color in both and then wear them for a bit to see how they work on you. jcrew colors are slightly nicer in shade but since i don't wear them for anything except underneath tshirts and sweaters and the like, im okay with not so fantastic colors if they hit on my hips in the right spot. do you have an both an old navy store and a jcrew store near you? honestly, i think that this is gonna be one of those things where you have to try them on. because they are tank tops and are great for layering, you will want to buy a whole bunch of them in all the colors so you need to make sure that they fit right on you. oh, and i haven't noticed anything wrong with the stiching or anything like that on the old navy ones, but of course, i wash all my stuff on delicate cycles and low heat in the dryer so that might help with that some. oh and sizing, i wear the medium in the old navy ones but have found the jcrew ones fit funny, like i should probably have a small in them (course than they would be way too short to wear for layering) for my chest and the shoulder strap slouchiness. again, you will prolly need to do a comparison on your own body for the best fit.

hth!

If these are the ones you are talking about, I love them!!  I have 2 that I got last spring and they have held up really well.  I wear them all the time and I think the fit and quality is actually really nice.

Not a big fan of these.  I think the fit is kind of boxy and weird on my body type, plus they are a little too short for me.

Love these ones.  They are thinner and longer than the other ones and fit much better.

HTH!  I haven't tried on the JCrew just for reference.
