Closet organization
Permalink Closed

I didn't want to hijack Luv2Shop's thread, so I started my own.  I am in awe of those of you who can organize your closet!  I have an organization problem, please help me.

Generally, my hanging clothes are fine. My part of the closet is really crammed.  I use stackable hangers for everything except suits and dresses.  They're organized by category, then by color.

My biggest problem is that the majority of my tops (all of them, except for blouses, actually) are stored folded in my dresser or crammed unceremoniously into stacked cubbies like this:

30" Vertical – Maple

I *hate* the cubbies.  My clothes don't stack well in them, sometimes if a cell gets too crowded, some of the shirts fall through the back, and generally it's really hard to find a top because they're divided between the dresser and the cubbies.  What ends up happening is that all my nice (i.e. going out tops, sweaters I love, and work shirts) end up in the dresser in no particular order other than "Yay! I got them to fit!" and all my casual tees and tanks end up crammed in the cubbies with all my sweaters that didn't fit in the dresser.  (One cubby cell can barely hold 4 sweaters).  I'd post a pic of the disaster that is my shirt storage, but I'm at work.

Does anyone have a suggestion for an alternative to these cubbies? I would love to get rid of mine.  These are about 13 inches wide, and I have 2 columns of them, so they take up about 26 inches of space, width wise, which is all the room I have for extra storage.  Each column consists of two of the cubby units like the one in the pic.

I'm open to suggestions about how to store my tops in other ways.  Please don't say "kick hubby out of the closet entirely."

I keep out of season clothes in under-bed storage to make extra room.

When I first moved in with my boyfriend we knew we were going to move to another house within 2 months so I didn't want to buy actual furniture until we got to the new house.  I didn't have anywhere to put my clothes so I bought 3 of these and even though we have now moved and are settled in (we've lived in our house for over 2 years) I still use them in conjunction with my other dresser because they're so convenient and great for storing tees and shirts you want to fold. I have a walk in closet and I keep these on one side, below the hanging bar, so no one ever sees them. Also, I never put the wheels on so they don't slide around.  You can get them at Target, Walmart, etc. HTH!

I had some of these:

Stacking Drawers - White Clear (49 qt.) (Set of 3)

Stacking plastic drawers - these particular ones are 9in high, 20in deep, and 20in wide.

This is what I currently store my shoes on, actually:

24 Horizontal - MapleThis one is 24in wide, and would eliminate the stuffing-into-cubbies madness.  You'd probably be able to fit two stacks on each shelf.

i have two closets and i also sort everything by item and color.  i use these drawers under my bed for sweaters and anything that will strech or lose it's shape if i hang it.  and i keep all of my shoe boxes and i steel shoe boxes from my hubby and put my flip flops in them.  so all of my shoes are stacked in my closet in the boxes.

Sterilite 45-qt. ClearView Storage Drawer - Set of 4they are 45 gallons.Large Countertop Storage Unit - Set of 4this one is a mini and i have two of them in my bathroom with makeup in them.  just makeup too.  that doesn't include my skin care products.

2nd this suggestion. I have been using these for a couple of years while we complete our bedroom (still need a dresser) and they're great.

tritto.

I put all my pj's, tee shirts (real tee shirts--not cute ones), and workout clothes in one of these so my dresser is freed up for my nicer clothes.  I also have a narrow one that I use to put belts, bathingsuits, and scarves and gloves in.
