Have you ever grown tomatoes?

One of the things I desperately miss about being in Louisiana is that my whole family has gardens & I have always gotten home grown veggies. I miss tomatoes the most. Well, everyone says they are super easy & I can grow them in pots on my patio but I have a bad habit of killing plants.

Have you ever done this? I really really want to & would like to hear your experiences if anyone has any.

No, but my grandma use to and my uncle planted some "special" tomato plants in her garden when he was in high school, lets just say it isn't the kind of weed you typically pull out of your garden   So anytime anyone talks about tomato plants, I think of my uncle's special tomato plants

Oh laken my dad grows tomatoes in pots and so does my friends dad. You just need a pretty large pot and some sticks to tie the vines on so they grow up the sticks.

FP, that is hilarious!

Laken, we grew 2 tomato plants in pots on our patio last year - one cherry tomato and one regular tomato.  We got two HUGE pots (bigger than you'll think you'll need) and those round tomato cage thingamabobbers.  When we planted them, we put a little dirt in the bottom of the pot and set the plant in there and then filled it up the rest of the way so 6 inches or so of stem was burried (helps grow a stronger root system ).  The cherry tomato did well - the regular tomato was a little spindly, but produced pretty well.  They probably would have done better if they'd had a bit more sun.  You're also supposed to pinch off the flower buds as they appear.

Let me know if you have any other questions .

Yup, growing tomato plants is pretty easy.  Their roots spread a lot, I think, which is why you need the bigger pot.

In a pot, I'd put a few handfuls of pebbles, gravel, or river rock in the bottom for drainage (so the rocks come up about 3-4 inches from the bottom of the pot) then add soil, then your tomato plant, and then add soil around the plant so there aren't any gaps between the pot and the plant.  I think they need a lot of water and sunlight.  Your tomatoes should do pretty well, especially in Texas where you won't have much cold weather.

my neighbor does this (he's a young guy too! i think it's so cute!) and how lsubatgirl suggested is just how he does it.  he has this really cool green ceramic pot on a stand and has a stick that he ties them to...
