Gym Recommendations-Chicago Ladies..
Permalink Closed

so my membership is expiring Jan. 21st, and I'm not sure I want to renew it at the same gym.  With the weather in Chicago, I know that I need a membership right now, so not having one is not an option.  My dad pays for my membership for my birthday every year, so I don't want it to be ridiculously expensive.  Right now I live in Lakeview, and belong to XSport (there's one on Addison, and North and Wells).  I like that one, but you have to pay one lump sum, instead of monthly.  I do have to say, that it only ends up being $33 a month.  The gym is great, they have classes (which i don't go to because i'm terrified of going to classes by myself), but it is just getting too crowded.  Also, I was thinking about doing a monthly thing and then just running outside/biking and taking pilates in the summer.  I need help!  Here is what i'm thinking:

  • depaul (my sister works out there and i love working out with a buddy) and you can do monthly, BUT it can get crowded, and i'm not in college anymore

  • crunch, lots of locations, but none super close to me, and i think it's pretty expensive

  • multiplex, there's one not too far on halsted (boystown) but i think it's more expensive, but you can do monthly i'm pretty sure, also, there's one at clark/division, so that's not bad either

  • do xsport again.  it's cheap, and monthly is almost the same as multiplex, and just try to go when it's not as busy...

i don't think i want to do bally's, i have a bad story about bally's, and i just think the people are too aggressive, also, i've never been, but the one at clark/diversey seems like it has a lot of members, and i HATE waiting for machine.

or, anyone have any other suggestions??  where do you ladies go?  i want to have all the research for my dad when he calls.  gosh i feel like a brat, having my daddy pay for my gym membership.

I actually vote for XSport - I think it's a great gym and my BF is currently trying to get hired there as a Personal Trainer - maybe you can hire him   I know the pitfall is that you have to pay in a lump sum, but I think in the long run you save.

We used to belong to the Bally's on Clark/Diversy about 2 years ago and we both HATED it.  It's always so packed, you have to wait in line for a machine.  I also just don't think it's the cleanliest gym.

This past year, we worked out at LPAC (Lincoln Park Athletic Club) because we live across from it, and it was pretty nice, but it's also sort of pricey.  We paid $120/month for a couple's membership.

I'd go w/XSport!

they're opening up another LPAC on broadway i think.  i think i want to stay under $75 a month (which i think multiplex and depaul is).  i was kinda thinking multiplex on halsted would keep me motivated (if you know what i mean).

i just think that xsport is a great price, and a great facility, but so many people go there now!  grrrr.

Have you considered smaller neighborhood gyms as well? I belong to East Bank Club ( not less than $75 a month) but we also go to #1 Gym which is on Sheffield half a black off Belmont. They're small, very neighborhoodie, very clean alot of equiptment ( albeit squished into a small place) but there's something about the people there. They're there to work out not pose and look all cute as I've noticed in places like Bally's.

Yeah, they are opening up Lakeview Athletic Club, but I don't think that will be done for a little while.  So I don't know if that's an option if you want to join soon.

Xsport is packed, but I don't know...depends what you care more about - people or price.  If you joined one of the LPAC gyms w/out your BF they charge way more for one person, I am almost sure it's over $75 a month.
