Soliciting and Cell Phones?
Permalink Closed

In the last 24 hours, I have received 3 solicitation calls from the same company - one around noon yesterday, at 8:30 pm yesterday, and again about noon today.  I missed the first call, and answered the second where the man was extrememly rude, refused to tell me his name, business, or why he was calling, and answered the third and the woman was much nicer.  They were calling to tell me I'd been entered into some 'chance of a lifetime' contest since I was a Mastercard cardholder (which I am not and never have been).  WTF?  They called on my cell phone, and knew my name.  They number they called from wasn't blocked, so I still have it in my cell phone.

I'm really ticked that they somehow got my number, and also that they are soliciting to cell phones which I was under the impression that it was illegal.  This is exactly the kind of thing that gets me all fired up, because one of my biggest pet peeves is rude solicitors.

Does anyone know if there's anything I can do about this?  I've tried searching for the phone number online and haven't come up with anything so far ...

I could be completely wrong, but isn't there some kind of law that if you ask to be put on the "do not call list" for a company and they call you again you get something great (like you can sue them for 1 million bucks, they go to jail, or you become queen of the world or something)??

In all honesty, I think they are by law not allowed to call you if you ask to be put on their do not call list.

Sorry, I am not making sense - I am freaking about having to go to the dentist this afternoon......

My boss said it is legal for them to call cell phones now.  As soon as she found out she had us all register our cell phones on the Do Not Call Registry.  I heard it takes up to 30 days to update the lists, but its worth it.  But I did get a rude guy call me several times a day even as late as Midnight and as early as 6AM about consolodating my credit cards and all I remember he was VERY RUDE, I would never do business w/them even if I needed to.

I registered my parents phones too, cuz I know they wouldn't know how to register online for it.  https://www.donotcall.gov/default.aspx

Thanks for the link BQ - I signed us up.

But I thought that soliciting to cell phones had always been illegal?  Like because you pay for your minutes unlike you do for a land line?

Ive recieved phone calls for "winning a vacation getaway" and "winning a vacation home" on both my cell and my work land line (which is a home phone essentially).  BOTH are listed on the do not call listing...

I think it was illegal, but I'm not sure that it still is.  I remember hearing a lot about the cell phone Do Not Call registry a few months ago and I think it was because they were making it legal.

I haven't (knock on wood) gotten any cell phone solitications yet, but I have gotten cell solicitations via text, which REALLY pisses me off because I have to pay for incoming texts!  I have more minutes than I can possibly use, so a phone call wouldn't make me that mad, but when I have to start paying because someone out there is texting me, THAT makes me mad!

I highly recommend the dnc regristry. Also anytime someone calls you let them know before you hang up that you want to be removed from all of their phone and mailing lists. Sometimes they get your number from somewhere you filled it in and that is how they get around the dnc list.
