My mom is 5'3 and is having the hardest time finding a pair of jeans. Her height is in her torso (like me) and so even shorter jeans are long on her little legs. Today we were in Old Navy when she decided she wanted a new pair and despite trying on a bunch of styles in short length, they were all too long. I guess if she found a pair she really liked she'd get them hemmed but it would easier if they fit without alterations.
She's 49 so she doesn't want anything too deconstructed/trendy, NO low rise but also no Mom jeans. All of the jeans she has now are from Gap or Liz Claiborne and they're looking pretty worn.
Gap actually has a lot of new styles - it might be worth a try-on session. I've found jeans there recently that fit suprisingly well, after many years of not being able to wear any of their stuff.
The Limited - carries short length (which works for me and I only have a 30 inch inseam) that are slightly higher-waisted. They have 3 or 4 different fits too.

I'm about 5'4 (and a half ) and I get the ankle length Gap, but they are almost a little long on me (okay with boots, but a teeny bit long with sneakers or ballet flats). I feel like a lot of brands (Gap, especially) have started to make their inseams longer- some jeans at Gap are a 31 inseam in the short length! I thought Gap might be adding an "extra short" option as well though- that might work!
You know what's funny Rosey - just 2 years ago or so (before Gap started coming out with all their newer styles, and the curvy/straight fits), the Ankle lengths were too short, and the Regular lengths were too long! Their current Ankle inseams work pretty well for me, but I don't wear flats so maybe that's why.
There is also a good bit of length variation from pair to pair, so if there is a particular style you like, I'd pull every one in my size and pick the shortest pair of the bunch .

I know what you mean, Elle- the old ankle lengths did tend to be a little short on me and the regular were always too long. I wish I could wear my boots all the time because the ankle are actually perfect with a kitten heel, but I usually end up walking 40 min. back and forth to class each day (up a hill, no less) and my cute pointy toes and kitten heels just don't quite cut it!
That's really good advice about checking the length variation from pair to pair- I never actually thought of that! Thanks!
My stepmom is 5'3.5" with a long torso, and she likes Ann Taylor and one of the Nordstrom house brands. I can't remember which one it is...not Caslon, it's a different one.

Halogen, maybe?

She likes the Halogen bootcuts. I am not sure if they come in short lengths or if they're just short anyway. They also have a higher rise, which she likes.

FYI - Nordstrom will no longer producing jeans as part of the Halogen line. The are marked way down right now to get them out of stores. I stocked up. I'm totally bummed, I loved the Halogen jeans.
i'm 5'2 but have just resigned myself to hemming any pair of pants i like, but my friend who is my height won't hem anything and ann taylor, ann taylor loft, and banana petites all fit her perfectly.
