WW girls - or anyone really, help
Permalink Closed

We got invited to some friends' house for a bar-b-que on Saturday. It will only be them & their daughter & us, so small gathering. They always always tell us not to bring anything (and I usually bring a dessert anyway), but they always make fattening food that I know that I can't eat. I really want to bring grillers or something & my own buns, maybe make a WW dessert so that I can feel comfortable with the food situation there. How in the world do I do this? Do I just call the girl & tell her "hey, i'm on WW, i want to bring some stuff, do you mind?" or is that rude? The only reason I am reluctant to do that is that she really struggles with her weight as well & I don't want her to feel like i'm pushing diet food on her (from other conversations we've had that has been an issue for her in her past). But I also am not going to let their unhealthy eating hinder my progress - I mean, even if they grill veggies they drown them in butter....

Thoughts?

I would probably bring my own food.. or if you don't feel comfortable doing that, then just eat before you go..

You shouldn't feel bad about trying to better yourself!

I can understand the awkwardness.  Can you plan ahead and bank some points for the BBQ?  Are you more worried about the temptation and the feeling that if you have a little you'll want more?  When I was on WW I would just try to make the best of the situations and eat the healthiest I could there, then make up for it with lower point foods the rest of the week.  Are you doing the points or core plan?

any idea what they're grilling. A chicken breat wouldn't be bad.

could you lie and say you a vegetarian and bring yourself a veggie burger?

at least, make *something* and bring it- wheather it's a dessert or a side dish or whatever. That  way you'll know there is something healthy that you can have. You dont have to even tell them its healthy! Just bring it and say its to share.

I'd bring a veggie burger and say I was trying to cut back on my meat intake. It's kinda weird but not really. I always bring veggie burgers when people are having meat grilling of some kind. I don't eat red meat and I hate for people to go out of their way to make something special for me.

Then I'd also bring some veggies. Just say something like, "we had these the other night and they're so delish! I just had to bring them for you to try them."

As for dessert, can you bring some Healthy Choice ice cream or something? You can just say it's to add to whatever she's got. That way you're not bring a whole dessert really, although you can just eat that and it doesn't look like you're bringing three separate things for you to eat. Or maybe some fresh fruit? Grilled pineapple is really good. Is that an idea? That could also be your veggie if you want. (I really like pineapples on my veggie burgers, but that could be just me.)

I may just tell her I'm doing WW - they do have chicken sometimes, and I'm sure if I ask they will have chicken there for me instead of burgers or hot dogs or whatever.

And I was planning to make those chocolate with pumpkin muffins that alb posted about in the food section - I think I'll present them as "cupcakes" LOL

And I'm doing the points plan, dawn, so I could lay off the other stuff during the day for sure!

Well I'll be joining you in a few weeks once this little girl is ready to greet the world.  I want my body back!  Good luck at the BBQ, those muffins sounded delish!

hmm I've done the bring your own food a few times and every time I get the weird looks, rolled eyes, and questions.  So if that won't make you uncomfortable then bring your own turkey burgers or chicken or whatever.  If that might make you feel weird how about just brining a salad for everyone to share that is healthy and maybe a dessert.  I have a great banana pudding recipe for you that I think comes out to 3 or 4 points per serving and every one loves it.  I will post it tonight when I get home from work.

This is exactly what I was going to suggest--bring a veggie burger or a chicken breast and just ask them to grill that instead.  I've done that before and nobody cared.  Or you could just tell her you're on WW and don't have enough points to eat red meat. period.  If she's a real friend she will be supportive regardless of her own issues.  And if not, I wouldn't care--it's important to you to stay within your points range for the week and they should understand that (after all, you pay to follow a strict dietary program, it's not like you're just dieting on your own).  I have been following WW to lose my baby weight and whenever I find myself in situations where I feel pressure to eat fattening things that I don't want (usually from my inlaws), I just tell them abt ww and it usually gets me off the hook.  I do get the "you're so thin why are you on WW/obsessing about your weight, etc.?" comments but I think in the end they respect me for taking care of myself (they usually end up asking me questions about it & I've recruited a few ppl to join actually--only b/c I like it so much and think it is the most un-diet-ish "diet" out there!).  Your friends -the girl especially--should respect you for your choices.  You never know, maybe this will be her opportunity to consider losing weight herself, whether it's through WW or another program.

Also, I'd definitely bring a homemade WW dessert if you have time to make one, so that you have an option and don't have to waste points on their's.  The muffins are easy and good but I have a ton of more dessert-ish dishes if you want me to post any.  The banana pudding lsu mentioned sounds good too.  hth some!

 edited b/c I can't spell this morning!

Laken--here are a few.  they are all untried though, sorry.  i am just starting to cook more frequently and have been collecting recipes, but haven't had time to try any of the desserts yet (except those choc muffins).  these looked good to me though:

CHERRY PUDDING CAKE (WW magazine)

1/3 c. all-purpose flour
1/3 c. packed light brown sugar
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
3 Tblsp. unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
1 (18.25 oz.) pkg. Duncan Hines Moist Deluxe white cake mix
3/4 c. water
3/4 c. unsweetened applesauce
1 large egg
2 egg whites
1 (20 oz.) can light cherry pie filling

1. Preheat the ovento 350*. Spray a 9x13-inch baking pan with Pam.
2. Combine the flour, light brown sugar, and cinnamon in a large bowl. With a pastry blender or a fork, cut in the butter until crumbly. Set aside.
3. With an electric mixer on low speed, beat the cake mix, water, applesauce, egg, and egg whites in a large bowl until moistened, about 30 seconds. Increase the mixer speed to medium and beat until well blended, about 2 minutes. Pour the batter into the pan. Spoon the pie filling on top and sprinkle with the crumb mixture. Bake until the cake springs back when lightly touched in the middle or a toothpick inserted into the cake comes out clean, about 35-40 minutes. Cool completely in the pan on a rack. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Note: Store covered in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.

Makes 24 servings at 3 POINTS per serving.

*Chocolate Pudding & Strawberry Parfait

1 pack FF Jello Chocolate Fudge pudding (4 serving sized pack)
2 cups skim Milk
1/4 cup Chocolate chips
1 Cup frozen strawberry slices in juice, thawed
1 container fat free cool whip

Just mix the pudding like normal, then fold in 1/2 of the container of cool whip. Put it in the freezer. Then throw on the chocolate chip layer. Mix the rest of the cool whip with the strawberries and that's the top layer. Then freeze it.

Can serve in 4, 6, or 8 servings

I figured the points using FF/SF chocolate pudding, 1/4 cup semi sweet choc chips, and 8 oz FF cool whip and the rest of the ingredients. Points came out to this: 4 servings = 5 pts, 6 servings = 3pts, and 8 servings = 2 pts.

One more:

Easy Weight Watchers Strawberry Cake

12 servings = 4 pts each (2 x 2 piece)

Box of Betty Crocker Super Moist Cake Mix (Golden Vanilla) 12 servings = 4 pts.
> 1 Container of Cool Whip Free
> 1 can Diet Cherry 7up
> 3 Cups Strawberries (Sliced)
> 2 egg whites (Optional)

Mix cake mix and 1 can diet cherry 7up together. (I
don't use the egg whites
but you can and it don't add any points.) Bake
according to the cake mix
directions Which is Preheat oven to 350 degrees and
bake 30-35 minutes in a
9 x 13 pan. Let cool. Add Cool Whip Free to the
top and then Add Sliced
strawberries. Its now ready to eat. I like to add a
little Splenda to my
piece just because I love sugar and strawberries. I
also refrigerate cake so
the Cool whip free doesn't get runny. Tastes kinda like strawberry shortcake

Let me know what you think.

What about bringing a diet coke cake?  A box of chocolate cake mix, one diet coke, two egg white.  Mix and bake according to directions on box.  My husband (an avid non dieter) love the cake.  You could make it in a bundt cake pan and drizzle some glaze over it.  Without the glaze I think it's 2 pts. per serving.

I'd just be straight up with them and be like "Hey, I'm doing WW and I was wondering if you'd be offended if I brought over a chicken breast or veggie burger for myself" or something to that effect.  Maybe you could bring a small veggie tray w/ low fat dip so you could have something healthy to eat that's not dessert.

If you don't feel comfortable with that, then just go and do your best to eat the healthiest thing there.  I actually think trying to make do with what they have there would be a good experience for you.  You're not always going to be on WW and you're not always going to be around people who have the healthiest choices, so it might be a good idea to start figuring out how to cope in those situations since healthy eating is a lifetime thing, you know what I mean?

Also, I'm not sure how the WW thing works, but you could probably have a burger (or half) with just lettuce, mustard, tomato, and onion and not totally kill your diet (skip the bun, mayo, and ketchup since those are just extra calories without a whole lot of nutrition).  If you eat well the rest of the day, then you might be fine.  Just my two cents from someone that doesn't know a whole lot about how WW works.

I called her today & asked her the plan & she didn't know yet. I told her my situation so she said they'd do chicken breasts in addition to whatever they were planning, so I feel better about that. She still told me not to bring anthing, but i'm making one of those desserts anyway. Thanks guys.

ETA: i said I'd bring them & she said no indeed - i really hate that! My mom taught me not to go anywhere empty handed - just wanted ya'll to know I'm not totally rude - ha
