so here's the problem, i have a grad school interview on friday and i'm stumped as to what to wear. obvs i want to make a good impression, but i don't really want to wear a suit, plus i don't own any that fit anymore. i'm pretty sure it's business casual, and since it's for grad school i'm thinking it's not going to be the same standard as like an i-bank or law firm. also i'm going to be doing a campus tour, and some other stuff so i need to be relatively comfy. it's from 11-3 so it's a long day.
i want to show my creative side, since everything i'm submitting in the application is about fashion and how i want to work in the fashion industry. but of course i don't want to come across as scary fashion girl and scare the suits.
here's what i'm thinking so far:
*black cord blazer (wide wale, fits really well), black pants (not cord). i'm stumped on the top. when i was putting this together i wanted to go for some sort of tuxedo style blouse like the one esquiress was looking at a few days ago. the problem is i don't actually own this shirt, and would prefer not to buy one. i have the joie tuxedo shirt from last season, but it's a bit big, and i don't want to look too boxy. alternatively i could layer some tees. i have a dressy v-neck tee from f21 that i could wear over a tank, under the suit.
*cream cord blazer, black cashmere tneck, black pants. i'm leaning towards this so far.
*this outfit, with the blazer over it. n/s how warm it would be. i'm going to be in new hampshire and if possible would live to avoid wearing a blazer and then wearing a coat over it.
*also i have this j.crew sweater that i could wear over an ivory crinkle cami with navy pants. kind of like a suit but not quite. could wear a jacket over it, but then shoes become a problem. i don't think they'd appreciate the yellow kors as much as i do, and i don't really have comfy brown shoes.
here's some pictures of what i have
this is the blazer, but i would button it. i have the same blazer in cream too, for a visual of the second outfit.
as you can see i'm clearly stumped. should i go back to the drawing board? i might update this tomorrow with more outfit ideas. i have a closetful of clothes and nothing to wear...
I understand what you mean about a blazer under a coat. I like the Jcrew sweater with an ivory cami. Maybe you could do the black pants with it and then wear black shoes. I really like that sweater with a skirt too. Maybe pair it with a brown skirt and brown shoes?
i LOVE that 2nd outfit. seriously want to copy every bit of it down to the yellow kors shoes!
but, you need something slightly different. i really like the sweater with the ivory crinkle cami- can you wear that with black pants? or is that sweater navy? plus wearing the sweater would solve the problem of the bulkiness of a blazer under a coat.
I dunno...I love the second outfit. All of it. And I think that the yellow shoes are more sophisticated than going with "black top, black pants, black shoes" - after all, aren't you supposed to be able to dress more creatively (even for interviews) in a fashion-oriented atmosphere...?
I like the first outfit too, but IMO it doesn't have the pizzazz of the first one. And I'm not really feeling the last outfit. I think you should go with the second one. It's respectful enough (skirt and sweater) but the layering, tights, and yellow pumps (I love that touch!) show your flair and I think that's important too.
Are the Kors shoes comfortable enough for you to have the tour without limping through it? This is definitely *not* a good time to be suffering for fashion. *s*
Good luck - I'm glad you're moving forward with this. I know you'll be great in the fashion arena!

Also, if you go with your original idea (black cord blazer, black pants) couldn't you wear the tuxedo blouse since it's under the blazer? I think it would be a really cool outfit.
I think you should play around with your closet and try a bunch of different combos on and take pictures until you settle on something you feel comfortable and confident in. I think that's the key to doing well in an interview.
I hope this doesn't totally change things and make you more stumped and I don't know what you are going to grad school for... but an ex-roomate of mine (a graphic designer) was told to wear skirts on job interviews (so it may not apply). I don't know the reasoning behind it, sorry.
To my grad school interview at Georgetown I wore a blouse and pants and I got a scholarship, so I don't think you need to worry about wearing a suit. I vote for the jcrew sweater, ivory cami, navy pants and yellow shoes. I think that the outfit is pretty conservative and the shoes would give it a bit of funk and show a bit of your fashion interest without scaring the suits.
you ladies rock! thanks for all the help. i'm going to go with the j.crew sweater, a skirt similar to the one in the pic., and burgundy boots. i can't quite bring myself to wear the shoes. i think that since it's new hampshire there might still be snow on the ground so wearing peep toe shoes might look a little insane. plus i'm going to carry a red bag (my botkier) so i think the red & yellow might be too much. thanks again for the help. fingers crossed it goes really well.
yay! that was just what i was going to suggest--wear the second outfit, but with tall boots. i think that will be very chic, but conservative enough. i do love your yellow shoes with it, though, in general.
