Need Help with a Stain

I have a canvas like bag that I use for school, but last semester it took a beating. I have dirt and pen stains on it. I tried using soap and water but it didn't work. Does anyone have any other suggestions? Thanks

spray hairspray on the ink stains and then wash in the washer.  hairspray usually gets it out.
