what snack foods save you?
Permalink Closed

You know which food I mean - when you are trying to eat well but are really hungry, do you have something you reach for that you know will satisfy / fill you until you can fix something healthy are make a plan? For example, for me, I know that I can have grape / cherry tomatoes or pickles with little / no consequence.

I'm trying to find more ideas so I was wondering if any of you have similar foods?

weight watchers would always suggest almonds, b/c they are so low in fat, but a good source of protein and have some other health benefits -

i never really gave almonds a chance b/c they are prob my least favorite nut!

i finally went to the store and they have flavored ones!

so i got the maui onion and garlic flavor - i keep a bag of about twenty in my purse and it's a good thing to help tide me over when i get those fast food/ junk food cravings!

string cheese.  Sometimes I just crave cheese and I know there are no carbs in cheese so string cheese is really easy to tote around.

Also, if you are trying not to drink pop, try Fresca.  I love it and I HATE diet pop.  It's not diet, it's sparkling soda with no carbs, fat, or calories.  It's really good and comes in some yummy flavors.  www.fresca.com

ILoveChoo - you beat me!  I was going to suggest 2-3 of those tiny already cut cubes of cheese.  But only 2-3!  It will fill you up!

Apples!  I eat an apple with dinner everyday because I know it will help me feel full.  I don't know if I am the only one, but it works for me.

Apples and bananas fill me up.  If I want something crunchy, I have Melba Toasts with a little homemade hummus.

When I'm craving sweets I eat a bit of sugar-free Jello. Also keeping veggies cut up in the fridge is good b/c its so much easier to grab than actually making something to eat.

Fruit - dried or whole, string cheese, nuts, yogurt, carrots or celery & pb, air-popped popcorn, soy crisps, dried edamame. If I'm really hungry Luna bars.

Some other good ones, but I have to portion these before starting:

Hummus, lf spinach dip, tzaziki, pita chips, bean dip (TJs has nf black bean dip), baked tortilla chips.

This may sound insane, but this past week I've been eating candycanes. Around 3:00 is when I get munchies, but don't like eating too much 'cause I don't want to spoil my appetite for dinner. So the other day I broke a candycane into 5-6 pieces and sucked on them piece by piece and before I knew it two hours had passed. I know they aren't healthy per se, but they keep your mouth occupied.

I looove to stick a whole wheat pita in the toaster oven just to warm it up and eat it with hummus or black bean dip.

Also I just read this on crunchy snacks at WW.com, and there were lots of good ideas.

Totally dried fruit. Dried cranberries, apples, pineapples, bananas, mango, papaya... I crave sweet a lot, and the pineapple rings are so good (they're healthier than candy I assume). Also, celery with peanut butter, apples with honey, and grapefruit with sugar.

Oh, and I usually make a shake for breakfast. Food just doesn't sit right with me first thing, so I bought a smoothie maker and I love it. Normally I mix frozen berries, milk, almond extract, and ice cubes. Or my new favorite is my own Chai tea smoothie.

milk

pumpkin seeds (honestly, they're great!)

pirate's booty (it's probably not THAT good for you)

jarlsberg cheese

i don't really snack that often, and if i do it's usually not good food because i'm a student and don't usually have time to pack snacks - resulting in me buying chips or cookies from a vending machine.

I actually heard on the radio a while back that something about the pectin in apples helps curb one's appetite.

Fairywings--Your smoothie recipe sounds great!  I love almond extract but never would think to put it in a smoothie.  I have 2 questions for you though--what is a "smoothie maker" and is it easier to clean then a blender?  I used to make protein shakes all the time in our blender but I got sick of cleaning it all the time (it wouldn't fit in our dishwasher).  Also--what is your Chai smoothie recipe??  Thanks!
