I finally found a pair of jeans that I need hemmed (I never find jeans long enough for my tall legs). Now I need to get them hemmed. Is there anything I should know before I do this? I think I remember someone mentioning that I can ask to have the original bottom part of the jeans kept when hemming. I just want to know what to ask for so I'm not ruining an expensive pair of jeans. I was thinking I'd just go to Nordstrom's and have them do it for me. Has anyone had any good or bad experiences with Nordstrom tailoring?
I believe that people usually have great experiences at Nordstom, I think someone posted that they call it a "tricky hem". However since we don't have a Nordstrom in Boston I can't speak from personal experience.
Good luck and enjoy your jeans!

i haven't used nordstrom, but have had mine done by a tailor.
just make sure you tell them that you want them by reattatch the original hem (and make sure they understand what you're talking about -- my big fear was trying to explain this to a tailor and having them say they could do it when they really had no idea what i was talking about). using the original hem makes such a difference. they look so much better that way.
also, wear (or bring with you) what size heel shoes you want the pants hemmed for so you can get the right length. they should have you put the jeans on and then mark the length on you with the shoes on.
I had a pair done at Neiman's and they turned out great, but they charge extra to reattach the original hem. Since then, I've had my sister or mom help me do it myself.
The only tip I have is to make sure you wash your jeans before you hem them because they will probably draw up some and you don't want them to be too short!

I just recently got a pair hemmed at Nordstrom, and my friends told me that I definitely need to request to keep the original hem...which is $16, if you get the jeans at Nordstrom's however, and just have they do a "regular hem," it's free!
They did a wonderful job, prefect length, but if I do it again (which I am sure I'll have to do, since all the nice jeans are super long on me) I don't know if it's really worth keeping the "original" hem..since they're going to use the same color thread anyway...I think the "regular hem" would be fine. I went to a tailor and asked them about keeping the original hem and they said they couldn't and it wouldn't look right, good thing i didn't settle...But I really wish I could just do it myself
