Lindsay Lohan Admits Bulimia, Drug Use

(Jan. 4) -- Lindsay Lohan says she battled drug use and bulimia in an explosive interview that hit newsstands on Wednesday, just as news circulated that she was admitted into a Miami hospital for a severe asthma attack.

The 19-year-old actress, whose acting and music careers along with her partying lifestyle have made her a paparazzi favorite, tells Vanity Fair that she was "sick," and that "I had people sit me down and say, 'You're going to die if you don't take care of yourself.'"

Lohan also says she used drugs "a little," but then adds "I've gotten that out of my system. ... I don't want people to think that I've done ... you know what I mean? It's kind of a sore subject."

The "Mean Girls" star cites Hollywood pressures along with emotional scars left by both her erratic father and her breakup from her first celebrity boyfriend, "That '70s Show" star Wilmer Valderrama as causes for her downward spiral.

Lohan credits "Saturday Night Live" producer Lorne Michaels with saving her from bulimia, saying he staged an intervention after she hosted the show. "I just started bawling," Lohan said of the incident. "I knew I had a problem, and I couldn't admit it. I saw that 'SNL' after I did it. My arms were disgusting. I had no arms."

Lohan also says her family was terrified of her physique. "My sister, she was scared. My brother called me, crying," Lohan said in the interview.

The New York Post, reporting on the Vanity Fair article, says that the magazine was contacted by Lohan's publicist to try to have the references to drug use taken out of the story.

What She Said

Lindsay told us: "I work hard enough to not have any concern about tabloids at this point." Read the Whole AIM Interview

As for her recent hospitalization, Lohan was in Miami for New Year's Eve when the severe asthma attack occurred, her publicist, Leslie Sloane, said. Sloane said the steamy Miami humidity may have contributed to Lohan's attack, as she has suffered from asthma since childhood.

Career-wise, Lohan's next project is "Chapter 27," a film about John Lennon's killer, Mark David Chapman, starring Lohan as a Lennon fan who befriends Chapman (played by her rumored boyfriend Jared Leto) in the days before Chapman assassinates the Beatles legend outside his New York apartment building.

I'm not shocked at all, because it was pretty obvious she had an eating disorder at the very least.  I'm just glad she admitted it and got help.  She looks way better and more healthy lately.  Now maybe her pal Nicole can tell a lesson from her and get the help she needs.  To me, it makes it all the more obvious that Nicole does drugs too.

I can respect her coming out and admitting she had a problem rather than just pretending nothing was wrong. That's tough to do. I like her even more now.

Ya that's how I feel.  None of this surprises me at all.  I remember someone on this website telling the story of how someone they knew found her purse with drugs in it.  She became thin very quickly which is a sign of drug use or eating disorder.  I hope she continues on a better path.

On a side note, I saw pics of her mom out partying with her and probably don't believe she gets the best support there either.  I think with all the pressures of hollywood and then having your mom out partying with you and basically condoning it certainly would not help!

Ditto. I think it's stupid when celebrities deny what is totally obvious. I give Lindsay credit for admitting her problem. It shows she's human.

I agree the above, but I think it's kinda tacky her publicist later tried to retract Lindsey's statement.

I have more respect for her for admitting it. But perhaps she ought to have a talk with her good friend Nicole. Because Nicole looks 10x worse than Lindsay ever did IMO.

I agree w/ everyone else, I wasn't shocked at all (except by her confession)

I'm actually relieved that she had the courage to come out and admit this - I really admire her for it.  Maybe her confession will inspire other celebrities who have recently lost unhealthy amounts of weight (Hilary, Nicole) to admit their own problems

I really admire her and respect her for actually admitting to her problem and getting help. That really took a lot of strength. She looks so much better now and I hope that she stays healthy.

While I personally loathe her, I do give her credit for coming clean about it although I fault her publicist for trying to sugar coat her drug usage. If she had an addiction and kicked it, who really cares?

That was my first thought too. That takes a lot of courage.

I think she looks much better on the cover of Vanity Fair than she did this time last year.

Good for her for a) admitting she had a problem instead of denying it and b) getting the help she needed to get over it.

I totally agree with HeatherLynn that she seems to be lacking positive role models.  Her mom seems kinda...I dunno...immature maybe.  Maybe that's not the right word, but it seems like something's missing there.  And her dad obviously is a mess.

I feel sorry for LL and I'm glad to see she's doing better.  I think she's a very talented actress for someone her age.  She looks better now than she has in a loooooooooooong time.

i saw that!!!

& when you read the article she's quoted as saying she was "making myself sick"....that could mean so many things! she never said a word about bulimia & it seems like the writer took that quote & ran with it...i'm on her side this time.
