Question for moms with (and pregnant with) girls
Permalink Closed

At your 20 week ultrasound were they able to tell you with certainty that your baby was a girl? I had mine today and the only thing the ultrasound tech said was that she didn't see a "pee pee" but wasn't absolutely certain that it was a girl. She said she could only know for sure if she definitely saw something that let her know it was a boy.

We really wanted to know the sex so we could start shopping and registering for more stuff so I'm kinda disappointed. I'm having a 4D baby preview ultrasound in mid-February so hopefully we'll be able to find out for sure then.

I hate waiting!

well...my sister actually was never able to get her baby sexed because the damned thing always had her legs crossed and while the tech thought that "it looked like a labia, we don't know for sure unless a penis is seen". okay..holy cow with the labia coming out of my sisters mouth! but yeah...unless there is definite sign of maleness it's a no go on the sexing.

what's a 4D pic? isn't the fourth dimension time or something?

(just needed to add this after i read what i actually posted....labia coming out of my sisters mouth? what?)

They can't always get a good view at the 20 wk scan - just depends on what position the baby decides to be in at the time .  It also depends pretty heavily on the equipment used as well as the experience level of the ultrasound tech, so says ultrasound tech FH .

Have a talk with that baby of yours before your next scan, hopefully s/he will be more cooperative next time .

at my 20 wk, it took forever, and the tech couldn't tell at first, and then FINALLY she said it was a girl because she saw three little lines that were the vaginal area. i still haven't bought too many girl things, just in case. before i had the sono, though, i kept dreaming we were having a girl, and plus she just looks like a girl!

The tech said pretty much the same thing at mine, but I had to have a couple of more after that so we got a close-up view.

Erin, I keep having dreams that it's a girl too so I really think it probably is.  I just wish I knew for sure!  Oh well.

Thanks for the info everyone.  Relrel, your post was funny, that labia thing cracked me up.  My whole office was looking at me like I was crazy!  Anyway, a 4D ultrasound is a scan that's not really for medical purposes but it lets you get a really good view of your baby.  Basically it's like looking at a picture.  The website is www.babypreview.com if you're interested in checking it out.
