STer of the Week - ERIN!
Permalink Closed

I chose Erin because we happen to have a few random things in common and I love all her vintage clothing finds.

I thought it would be fun to start off with some Proust Questionnaire questions.

- Who are your favorite heroes or heroines of history? Or of fiction? (whichever is easiest for you to answer)

- Which talent would you most like to have?

- What are your favorite names?

- What is your greatest extravagance?

- What do you consider the most overrated virtue?

i know this is probably tacky, but i love scarlett o'hara.

Which talent would you most like to have?
i would love to be good at sports. i enjoy them, but i've never really been "good" (or graceful!).

What are your favorite names?
-i love ava and malcolm. we are almost set on lilah for the baby though. (my cousin said if she has a girl she will call her ava, and i don't want to be a name stealer!)

What is your greatest extravagance?
-hands down, probably food. i hem and haw about clothing purchases, but i have no qualms on spending $$$ on really good food.

What do you consider the most overrated virtue?
-tact!! sometimes i wish people would just tell it like it is. (and i think sometimes people need to be told what's what without skirting around the issue)

Yay Erin!

My question is purely selfish because I'm enjoying my SS vintage purse so very much. Where did you find it? When you saw it, how did you know it would work with outfits? Are you very picky about the hardware and the inside? (These are all questions I ask myself when I'm looking at vintage purses and I'm dying to know someone else's pov.)

My questions are pretty basic:

What do you do for a living?  (I think you've said before, but I can't remember)

How did you meet your hubby?

What are excites you most about being a mom?

What are you scared of most when it comes to being a mom?

When are you due? (Again, can't remember...)

What's your favorite thing to do in your free time?

What's your favorite thing to cook?

Favorite recent movie?
unfortunately i don't go to the movies a lot and i *gasp* fell asleep during the end of harry potter. i guess i really liked serenity, but that was awhile ago. i loved narnia, too.

What does your ideal Saturday consist of?
flea-marketing followed by a relaxing day at home with my husbint

What's your most satisfying accomplishment?
getting a photography art grant from dccah (funded by the nea)..either that or having my work published in vibe mag

Where did you find it? When you saw it, how did you know it would work with outfits? Are you very picky about the hardware and the inside?
re the purse: i am fortunate to have not one, but *four* vintage shops near me. i don't always know something is going to work with an outfit, but i think if something is neutral to begin with...then you can kind of pair it with everything. i didn't think the purse was loud so i thought it could be paired with almost anything...

What do you do for a living? (I think you've said before, but I can't remember)
i am a hairstylist, sometimes graphic designer (what i went to school for)...sometimes photographer (used to do a lot more freelance)

How did you meet your hubby?
friends, sort of

What are excites you most about being a mom?
i am excited to do things different than my mom. since i am having a girl (so they say!) i am super psyched to raise her with good self-worth and esteem. to help her see things in ways i wish i could have when i was younger.

What are you scared of most when it comes to being a mom?
besides labor (!!!) -- probably making mistakes my mom did. initially i was unsure about having children because of this. also i am a SUPER control freak. at one of my old jobs they used to call me "little miss gestapo."

When are you due? (Again, can't remember...)
april 3, but i think i am gonna be early. (i was two months premature)

What's your favorite thing to do in your free time?
read! either that, or buffy/angel marathons.

What's your favorite thing to cook?
vegan pho, mulligatawny....i am not veg, but i do not cook meat..and more often i cook vegan at home

re: vintage shopping tips -- get outta the city! it's very hard to find anything in picked over vintage shops. i am a big fan of thrifts, but again, i think in big cities they are picked over unless you are there quite often. (there is one on my street! i used to be there every day!)

Omg! Can you post a recipe for vegan pho? Vietnamese is my favorite and if I could cook it at home - ah! the money I'd save.

blubirde: i will type of the recipe later when i can find the cookbook. (our books are all in the dining room until the renovating is done)

why do you not cook meat? Did you grow up eating vegetarian/vegan?
well before breaking the vedge, i was veg for a really long time (about two years vegan, i don't know how many veg). i've never cooked meat before and the idea sort of grosses me out. i still rarely eat meat, and really only chicken. (right now i am in a super long john silver's chicken plank phase)

who in your family are you closest to?
unfortunately i'm not super close with my family. we get along ok now, but my parents were emotionally abusive and i moved out a week after high school. i am ok with my brother and sister, but they weren't really supportive of me after i moved out...which really hurt my feelings. (i am "over it" but not really!)

any pets?
no
i had a mini-dachshund (wrinkles) growing up, though

here is wrinkles playing dead (she was very skinny because she had stomach problems):

Erin, I am so sorry that happened to you! It is amazing that you had the courage to recognize what was happening at such a young age.

Oh, and that dog is adorable!

Where do you live? Where did you grow up?
pittsburgh. i grew up an hour north of here. although i feel i did my serious growing up in dc when i moved there. talk about culture shock for a hick..

How do you navigate a thrift store? what do you look for first?
i have a pattern with almost every thrift store. if i am by myself i first hit shoes, dresses, coats..then maybe purses, scarves and sweaters if i am not tired. OH and jewelry..but since it's always near the counter i look last. it can definitely be overwhelming. the one on my street i look through usually in less than 15 minutes because the selection is super hit/miss. (they have the best shoes, though! this is where i've found vintage ysl, gucci, etc -- and most of my vintage brooches)

i find flea-markets way more overwhelming, but usually a bigger payoff. i've gotten some great vintage furniture from my favorite flea ever: roger's flea market..somewhere between youngstown and liverpool, ohio.

What do you like about vintage wears?  What got you interested in vintage clothing and how old were you?

how long have you been married?
3.5 years, together 'bout 7

what is your all time fave vintage buy? pics if possible.
probably this necklace i wore when i got married (bad pic):

it's hard to pick one, though! otherwise, this was kind of a ridic purchase, but i LOVE this vintage "housedress." it is my version of a bathrobe and i wear it all the time.

and housewise, this drexel table (which needs cleaned, and i swear the floor isn't dirty, it's just the way the tile looks in the pic!)

What do you like about vintage wears? What got you interested in vintage clothing and how old were you?
i like not wearing what everyone else is. not to say i don't follow trends..i def do..i love wearing stuff that is "trendy" but finding vintage versions of the trend.

my mom took me flea-marketing for the first time when i was 8ish, and a good friend of hers used to do estate sales so i would always go to those, too, when i was young. i went to my first thrift when i was around 10 or 11 (i think). then a friend of mine from school and i used to hit up this thrift near our school every so often around 7th or 8th grade. it's rather unfortunate but i stopped vintage for awhile when i went into a semi-goth phase in 9th grade.

way to go erin!

couple of questions...

what vintage stores (specific name or area) in pgh? curious, cause i used to live in pgh.

if you could only have one form of entertainment, what would it be, book/movies/television?

what continent do you most want to visit and why?

if you had to pick, what century would you want to live in and why? (you don't have to be in the usa)

what vintage stores (specific name or area) in pgh? curious, cause i used to live in pgh.
on ellsworth: eons and hey betty (although i am trying to cott eons because the guys who work there are total bitches)
carson street: kharisma and yesterday's news
also in oakland, there's crimes of fashion, but i never find anything there...and technically avalon now sells vintage clothing. (and reasonably priced! i've found some cute purses there)

if you could only have one form of entertainment, what would it be, book/movies/television?
books, most definitely

what continent do you most want to visit and why?
europe! this is a really sad confession, but i've never been on a plane. my bff invites my husband and i all the time to stay at her parents beach house near brest, but i can't quite get over my fear of flying.

if you had to pick, what century would you want to live in and why? (you don't have to be in the usa)
i don't know about century, because i am pretty into modern conveniences. maybe the 50s? there were already cars and tv, so i would be set. it'd be fun to live in a time where people actually know their neighbors, can leave doors unlocked, etc. i'd love to live in a time where there is a lot less consumerism and greed. i don't think i could deal with living in the south during this time period, though. maybe california.

i really want to become more organized. also, would love to make dinner every night.

favorite holiday gift this year?
all-clad stockpot

who's closet would you want to raid?
either amanda peet or selma blair. (neither are my size, but let's pretend they are) i like rachel zoe, but i'm not really into 70s halston. i think reese witherspoon (or possibly her stylist) has great taste, too.

favorite way to spend the weekend?
ideally on a weekend getaway! i love rural kentucky + wva, and probably asheville, nc is one of my favorite cities. everyday is kind of the weekend for me, though.
