ok, i'm probably having the worst week ever in general, but today was just terrible. sorry in advance for the rant.
well, transit strike means driving my bf to work (he works only 10 mins away from my job, but has to be there at 9, i have to be there at 10). we leave at 8:30- late, but i don't live too far- this would be a 20-25 min drive normally. It takes us 1.5 hours- i'm just settling in. yesterday- the drive back took me 1.5 hours and same with the one in the morning. its about 4 miles but across big roads and in bad areas of brooklyn, so i wouldn't walk it. i've worked every day for the past 12 days until this weekend- and i'm exhausted- i walk a min. of an hour a day at work and some times carry extremely heavy things so my legs and back are so sore. this weekend my sister came, so i had it off, but we walked everywhere. i like how my legs are looking more slender, and i've lost probably 5 lbs, so its not all bad, but i'm constantly tired and its FREEZING here. well, anyway, i am taking over for a week while the designers are on vacation. I have SOOO SOO much i need to get done up in times square- basically completely dependent on the subway. this sucks so much- its all samples that need to be started asap for their runway show, and i need to get them out this week, but i have a ton of extremely heavy fabric that i have to pick up from down there as well, and take it back here. I have enough money for 3 car rides (each will be about $25), but thats it. and a lot of the people i need to meet with are probably not there because of the strikes. so work is really stressing me out, i have to figure out how to get all this done in times square/garment district, which is probably 2 hours away at this point with traffic. and i dont have phone numbers or addresses to a lot of these places, i have to call about them but the designers are in cali and i don't really want to bother them while they're on their one vacation for the year. and i haven't gone christmas shopping for anyone important- was gonna do this after work in the city one day. can't do it now because of the strikes. well, all this would be somewhat bearable, except...my car was broken into this morning. they shattered my window and stole my carry on bag and whatever was in there , as well as another shopping bag. i don't really think anything was important in there- just bath/beauty products like my extra contact solution, etc, and i think some receipts for things i might have to return but they ruined my car, which i cant have insurance pay for because of the $500 deductable, so thats another $200 or so that i don't really have at the moment, in the height of the strike- when i need my car most. Sigh, i've had a terrible week, and i can't finally relax until the 24th alright, vent over, thanks for listening, other than my bf, i feel like i have no friends here
Oh man, your week sounds awful! I'd probably hide in bed and cry if I were you. (Your issues are the exact kinds of things that would make me go insane.)
(((hugs))) I feel for you and I'm sending good vibes your way!
Was it your windshield by any chance? In most states with full coverage your windshield is covered without paying a deductible. Also if it helps, Southern Cali is normally a ghost town, especially this week, so most people are out of the office, if not for the whole month.
I'm sorry you are going through this, sometimes it seems like the Holidays brings just as much stress as happiness. You probably already have done this, but I would write a list of everyone you need to contact or pick things up from. Try to research all available numbers and start calling the ones you have, trying to find a central time or place you can get everything at once time. For me, checking off things of the list is almost an instant stress reliever.
no, not my windshield, thankfully. i wouldn't have been able to get anywhere if that was the case.
i NEED to get into times square- every single car service is booked, as well as for tomorrow. This strike couldn't have happened in a worse city in this country, nor at a worse time. i completely 100% rely on the subway for my job. i can't walk into the city either- i have a ton of heavy things to carry plus it would be about 70 blocks.
i'm sorry that your week has been crappy. ((hugs)) i'm not sure if this is a viable option, but could you possibly drive to jersey and then hope on the path train? i'm n/s how long the drive would be, but i don't think it would be outrageous, and there's tons of parking near most path stations. the path train would drop you off at 33rd & 6th.
I'm sorry you have to go through this lynnie. I will be sending good vibes and hoping you make it to your destination. It seems like the strike threw a lot of people off kilter, so don't blame yourself for anything you couldn't get done in time. Just stay safe.
I sincerely hope your day picks up. At the end of the day, why don't you take at least 30 min., sit on the couch, put your feet up, sip a hot cocoa or something, and watch some stupid silly tv show. Seriously, you really need it.
oh lynnie, I feel so bad for you! honey's idea is good though. I know a lot of people are driving to Jersey or Westchester and then taking NJ Transit, the PATH, or Metro North to get into Manhattan.
This strike is happening at such a terrible time. It's only the second day and I'm already totally exhausted and sore and sick. This morning I woke up with a really bad earache and a nosebleed :( Like you, I was on my feet a lot all weekend (spent all day Friday shopping and at MoMA, then was at work on Saturday and Sunday packing up all my stuff and lugging it to another desk) and I was really looking forward to this week being quiet at work but nope, it's been really busy and a bunch of my coworkers are on vacation. Plus my bf and two of my other friends are in Jersey and unless I feel like walking all the way to Penn Station or shelling out for taxis I don't really have any way to see them until the strike ends. The one good thing is that my parents have a car and can come pick me and my sister and grandma up on Friday night or Saturday so we won't be stranded all alone in Manhattan for Christmas.
where in jersey is it? and does anyone know how much it costs/how much parking is?
lynnie there are several path stations in jerse. i don't drive so i can't be of that much help as far as directions but i'll do my best. i know for a fact that grove st, journal square, and newark all have parking, and assuming that there's no price gouging it's b/t $7-$10 a day. the grove street station might be the easiest since it's about 5 minutes driving from the lincoln tunnel. but then again i'm not sure exactly how you would get there driving from bk and if there's a way to avoid going through manhattan. here's the link to the path's website, i'm sure you could get yahoo directions from your house
journal square might be the easiest, depending on how much stuff you have since there's more parking and it's a connecting station so you're more likely to get a seat. the path train is $1.50 per ride, and if you have a pay per ride metro card you can just use that. if not there are machines to buy tickets from. it'll take you 20-25 minutes to get to the city once you're on the train.
also i know there are some jersey buses that take you right to port authority on 41st, but i'm not sure where those stops are.
what about the long island railroad in queens? anyone have any info on that? i could possibly have my bf drop me off there. penn station is really convenient to where i have to be. anyone been using that?
