I have been summoned...

For Jury Duty! Oh my gosh, I was so shocked when I got my notice in the mail today. I don't know anyone who has ever been summoned. Has anyone here ever been summoned? Its not until the end of January but I'm nervous already! I wonder what its going to involve?

I was summoned once and, even though you get summoned you don't always serve as juror in a trial. But, my very 1st time I did. It was a really hard case because it was a child molestation case. But, I did feel good for serving my civic duty in that kind of case.

i have!

i got out of mine b/c i lived in a different county than where i was summoned (permanent address was listed as my parent's)  but they did have me serve one day b/c they didn't have enough people and i was already there.

it was basically about 6 or 7 cases that came in and we had to vote on whether or not they went on to court.  80% of them were about identity theft!

i don't think you really know until you get there what kind of jury you will be serving on.

I have too!

Basically, I spent a few hours there waiting to go in to be interviewed, then I ended up getting to go home because the case was settled before it even started!

Don't be nervous about it at all - it's no big deal.

I have been summoned too. I basically waited in a room for 6 hours just in case they needed people, but I was never put on a jury.

I will be serving again in March.

i was summoned once, but the night before they ask you to call and check in to some number and when i called i was told i was no longer needed because they already had enough people. rock on!

and on a wierd note...im 26 and have only been called for jury duty ONCE, my sister who is 24 has been called like FIVE times. she has never served because she hasn't lived at her permenant address since she was 18 and just never changed it. i guess the jury gods are against her. she was warned on the fifth time that they will not except any excuses next time. ohh, scary.

I don't know exactly how the system works where it summons people, but I've been summoned twice. Once when I was 8, and once when I was 16. So I'm definitely on the wrong list somewhere, or I'll be hearing back again when I turn 24.

HAhaha that's so funny!

I was summoned twice within 2 or 3 weeks, but they were for different courts (I don't really understand all that but one was civil, one was something else think).  Anyway, I didn't have to serve because I go to school in a different state.

I am interested to see how it works in Canada, so give us an update!

I've never been summoned (yet), but I had a friend that was summoned when she was 9 months pregnant - for 2 weeks after her due date .  When she went in to explain that she would either be being induced on that day or be 1-2 weeks postpartum and breastfeeding round the clock, they told her that that wasn't an acceptable excuse !

Um, gee.  Then what is an acceptable excuse?

Hope you don't end up having to serve, BC .

Elle, I had an acceptable excuse, apparently.  They called me when I was in law school.  I told them I was a law student and that got me off the list.    Requiring someone who have birth 2 weeks ago to serve on a jury is awful.  Don't bf-ing moms have to pump if they don't have the baby nearby to er... relieve the pressure?

Same here. Bring some reading material or crossword puzzles to keep yourself occupied.

That is really taking it too far.  I was once excused because I was too busy at work.  I think they usually at least let you reschedule for a more convenient time.

I've only been in for jury duty once.  I just sat in a room and read for two days until they let me go.  They did bring me in and question me to see if I was appropriate for a domestic violence case.  They didn't pick me tho.  It turned out that the defendant was someone I knew from high school, and I thought he was a major jerk.

I have been summoned twice. First time I didnt have to go to jury selection because I had some reason, can't remember what. A couple of years ago I was summoned again, and I had to go to the selection. I went up and the defense refused me so I didn't have to serve. I think I didn't fit his idea of a good juror. I believe it was a sexual assault case involving a woman about my age. Obviously the defense wouldn't want me. So depending on the case you may not have to serve!
